Grand Rapids Underground Freeride Trail?

Postby jasondew » June 18th, 2006, 1:19 pm

Can anyone tell me anything about the Grand Rapids "Underground" trail? I was recently told of this trail and checked it out on foot today. Does anyone know who built those stunts and who owns the property?

Feel free to PM me if you would prefer not to respond on the public forum.

Thanks,

I think it's public property. I know the guys that built it but they do not want it posted anywhere. In fact, they requested no faces in the video I shot out there in 2002.

Is it still rideable?

some of it looks to be rideable--not much. it wouldn't take too much to shape that place up though.

haha, that trail is pretty much open for anybody to do what ever they want with it. The area bmxers have been building the dirt jumps up every now and then.

The land is owned partly by the cemetry and the railroad. You just have to be aware of the sketchy people that come back there later in the day. Besides that nobody rides that stunts at all anymore. They are run down for the most part. You are pretty much free to build back there, just make sure to respect the remaining stuff. And pick up your trash when you're done with anything. Vince is the only remaining person that helped contribute to building the trails and he still rides, the other guys that helped to contribute I know ride but have moved away or different focus on Cyclo-Cross and such.

I know I am pretty excited about that log ride.

Wish I could help out, but I know I would be overextending myself. GR is about an hour from me.
That trail is closer to completion than mine. Minus the sketchy people though.

some people are going to be doing trail planning/cutting and maintenance at the Underground saturday about 11. anyone who's interested in volunteering, meet us there. bring rakes, shoves, clippers, and whatever else you think might be useful to get this place going again.

i'd love to help.

i just moved back to GR from chicago. so unfortunatly i never got to ride the UG...i just watched everyone else having fun via pics from ARM and other sites. glad to hear there's some people looking to revive it.

someone will have to clue me in to where it is. i have some guesses, given the cemetery/railroad combo. pm or email me if i'm worthy...

thanks,

Here is some video from the UG. It's from 2002 when it was in good condition. http://highgearracing.com/Video/HighGear2002-1.wmv

Feel free to browse the other videos at: http://highgearracing.com/Video/

I especially recommend the Connor interview. Right click and save as.

Grand Rapids Freeride

Postby cash » July 17th, 2006, 2:06 pm

Hey, everyone. Since there seems to be some good interest in rebuilding the Underground, as well as pushing Grand Rapids freeriding in general, I've set up a simple site at http://www.geeride.net for us all to share, think, discuss, plan and foster the GR freeride community. There are a couple sites like this in Chicago that really help connect riders and build community. I can't find theARMsite anymore, so I just threw this together...

Anyway, check it out and go register as a user. It's waaay beta right now. As more people sign up, I'll add more features...

The Armsite is dead. Gary who owned it lives in Wisconsin and doesn't ride anymore.

Build something and people will show up to ride it. Be prepared for that.
