I walked the trail in several different spots and there are good parts and bad areas too. Buckshaver is perfect (if you have studded tires) up to where its flooded. I wouldn't trust that ice. East loop is good. west loop looks iffy but I think its rideable. I'm going out there Thursday morning for a couple hours if anyone wants to ride ice with me.

someone built a really nice bridge on the hiking path next to the river heading west toward bridge #5

I still have not heard or found out who has been building the River Edge hiking trails out there, but I noticed another bridge just north of the western end of the East loop when you crest the top of that climb. Much better than the couple of random logs that were there for so long. I don't know if they ever got permission from the township to build this trail, but maybe they are just riding on our coat tails so to speak ? Most of it is not so bike friendly and if you screw up, you're going for a swim in the Rouge River (probably not recommended).
I love mountain biking because I haven't found anything that is more FUN !!
Of all the paths you choose in life....make sure some of them are DIRT !!

Commuting miles in 2012 = 1065
Total road/trail miles = 2800

Heading out tomorrow morning at 10am. Walked it some today, looks like I can ride it. Studded of course as its all ice under the snow.

After doing several errands I got out to the trail around 2PM, figuring I'd just do the west loop. Went better than expected, the snow was a few inches deep, but really soft. I did several passes on most of the sections I did on the west loop. There was only one spot where I had to walk as the snow was quite crusty underneath the fresh powder. Had time to move on to the Crooked Vulture, I ended up getting lost in there, looks like some deadfall poking up through the snow sent me off course. Crossed over to the old car where many hikers seem to have packed down the trail fairly well. Then I went down the main portion going past the free ride platform. I retraced my tracks to find hikers followed my tracks back to where at entered that section. Didn't have time to ride everything, but I tried doing at least two passes on what I did ride which wasn't difficult at all on a fat bike. I did see some regular MTB tracks on the crushed gravel paths.

Thanks Steve! I have tried to ride everything but buckwheat where it's flooded. It's been so cold I think even the flooded area is rideable by now. I will catch you out there one of these days. I'm going out there Thursday no matter what happens.

Enjoy! I think there should be some rideable sections unless we get a good dumping of snow again. Someone seemed to be holding a good line on the two track which I thought was even deeper than what was on the trail.

Me. It seems with my 1.8" studded tires it's easier to ride fresh deep snow than following other tire tracks.

I tried. I rode the east loop up to the power lines. I rode the gravel path to check other sections of trail. The wind 're-covered everything. Couldn't see my tire tracks or Steve's from the other day. I could ride the deep snow (6-7") without a problem until hitting tracks frozen and buried. The wind was really something. More snow tonight and Saturday makes it look like ILRA and 2 track riding at the hick for the next couple of weeks.

Started around 9:30, finished at 2PM when the rain started making a mess. Was able to retrace last week's ride, did several passes on the east loop, headed over to the West, crossed over to the old car trail and Crooked Vulture. I made it to Lucky Dawg, but that section is in seriously deep snow, so I turned back. Noticed another fat bike track on the two track going to Haggerty, so I rode that and back, did one last pass on the East loop. In the morning my tracks were getting covered quickly by the falling snow. Seems to be pretty flat once I left. Hikers and runners using it did not sink, and when I left there were no more cars.

East loop is like a sidewalk about 12" to 18" wide solid and packed passed the power lines down the hill to the bridge bypassing crooked vulture. take the gravel path back to the start of the west loop which is packed ok or continue on the gravel path to Sheldon rd. get in a couple miles tomorrow, around 10am.

The trail was really nice this morning. 10° with no wind. Met Steve the photographer on his fat bike. 18" wide trail of packed snow...pedals hitting on either side.

Packed down an additional section along the river on the east loop. There's one stretch of the wetland's hill packed down also by hikers.
