Pretty solid out there. A couple of chronic mud holes, but otherwise stellar. If you ride on a red day, be aware that one berm, a couple switchbacks from the top of Phaser, is a complete sandbox. Quite a surprise if you come in hot. You'll either be grabbing a handful of brake or going down. I warned you... :-)

My son and I rode it today too. What a great trail. It wasn't even that hot in the woods. 90 in the sun. I know the exact sandy berm you are talking about. I think my 2.3 tires saved me there. Great time.

FYI. Talked to the fire dept tonight at the trailhead. They were scouting emergency access points for a triathalon that apparently is using the trail this weekend.

Haven't seen anything about that yet here so be prepared for some non riding time here this weekend.

Maybe someone else has more details?

There is an adventure race in Rockford this weekend. I know that they (we - my wife and I are doing the race) are using Luton. I haven't heard that we'd be at the Merrell Trail as well, but I also wouldn't put it past the Race Director to use it either. The race is from 8-12 and we'll be spread out all over Rockford, so the trail shouldn't be too crowded with racers. However, my guess is that if you chose to ride their on Saturday morning that we'd be more in your way than vice versa. I don't think many of the participants are very good mtber's based upon the past races I've done with them.

Went and rode the yellow trail tonight with my brother. The trail was dry and fast with only a few sandy sections. This was the driest I have seen it, though I have only ridden there a couple times. I plan on getting out there quite a bit more. Possibly tomorrow with my wife. :D

Is the Wynalda loop open yet? If so, any update on how the berms are packing down? I was out of town this weekend so I am not aware of how much rain we received around town. Hopefully there was gentle rain, not torrential rain to help pack down the berms that were powdered clay that I saw firsthand when I helped smooth them down last week Wednesday afternoon.

it is open and should be dry enough to ride on Tuesday. The bridge still needs a hand rail and the ravine crossing has to be armored. The red direction goes through the ravine first and the yellow direction uses the bridge first. Arrows should be up tomorrow night

Thanks for the update Rick. I just finished riding there tonite and saw a log across the entrance and figured it was closed so I did the proper thing and skipped it. That must not have been obvious enough for others tonite though judging from all the tracks going in. Not to mention the rider I saw coming across the bridge. He asked me in the parking lot when it opened and I said I didnt think it had opened yet due to the log across the entrance to it

Hoping you guys don't get too much rain up there. Would like to get up and ride Merrell and Luton tomorrow afternoon. Forecast looks like tomorrow should be good so long as you don't get too much today/tonight. Fingers crossed!

FYI - The armoring thru the creek on the entrance/exit to the Wynalda loop is not holding up. On a ride today at lunch time, I sliced a Racing Ralph when 1 of the stones flipped up on it's side due to the soft clay underneath as I crossed thru it :x Perhaps larger stones encompassing the width of the trail would last longer here due to the soft substrate? Just a thought but I'm no armoring expert. I'd gladly help repair/improve this armored area when the time came to do it.....

Mike, those pieces were tossed in there by someone else as a stop gap measure. We intend to armor the *beep* out of it this Thursday night with that huge pile of flagstone if you want to come.

Well that explains why it looks like those stones were strategically "tossed" in there

What time is the armor party Thursday night?
