Western: Yankee Springs

How much of this trail is sandy? A group of us are going for the first time on Friday and I'm wondering if I'd be better off on my 26" mtb or my fatbike? The last page or so of posts make it seem a lot sandier than the description in the trail guide.

The sand isn't that bad in terms of riding, I barely even notice it. It's just a really good soil for draining after a rain.

It's been dry this week--if you can comfortably keep up with your friends on your fat bike I don't think it would hurt to take it. I enjoyed riding YS later in the season last year on mine! If you got a technique that works for you for riding through sand on your regular bike, though, you will be fine on that as well...

Unfortunately we don't have the room to bring both this time although that is a great idea that I have never considered before. I'm going with a relatively slow group so fatbike it is. Thanks for the input.

Been a while since I rode Yankee Springs. Perfect day to be on the bike. No humidity and temps were good. I'm not in very good shape so I took my time getting around. The trails were very dry and fast but as usual much sand to go through. Enjoyed the trail anyway. Much motivation for weight loss

Does anybody know what the total feet vertical climb is for Yankee? Just the 11 mile race course is what I am interested in.

Rode 2 laps this AM. Trail is okay, tons of deep sand though. Good for skill building... Was thinking of mounting fatter tires if this summer continues to be so dry. Also, be warned, the deer flies are out of control terrible. Was chased off the trail during my first lap - had forgotten to use bug spray. I applied Deep Woods Off liberally and the 2nd lap was a lot more fun. Love the short, nasty climbs!!

I rode Yankee last Saturday. It was great. The sand has firmed up with the moisture that as gone through the area. No worries.

There was one tree down, but a guy came up to us in the parking lot asking where it was... I think he was planning on clearing it.

Rode Yankee on Monday, had a good ride. Trail is in good shape, sand was still firm in most spots.

I would dare say it should be good to go. Yankee is like a sponge especially this year. Conditions ought to be perfect I would think.

3 or 4 trees down most are rideable to skilled rider. Tons of debris and trees made it feel like a obstacle course. It was great!!! Trail was very fast. When the mmba removes those last few hills and technical(lame) areas it will be very fast. Then they can start bringing horses in and everyone else to..
