Question on bike - no bashing please

Postby sndmn2 » May 15th, 2012, 9:51 am

I liked two rides I tried at the bike demo. Specialized StumpJumer 29 and the Salsa Mamasita. When reading reviews on the Stumpy there seemed to be concern on wheel strength. There were more than one report of wheel warp. I weigh in at 210lbs. Should I be concerned about this if I go with the Stumpy? Has this issue been addressed ? I thought I would ask those who know more than me.Truthfully I liked the Salsa a little better but am still going through the deciding stage. Thanks.

If there is a wheel strength issue, I would steer clear, but I don't have an *beep* of wheels at home waiting to be used.

I've never had too many problems with wheels, mine are starting to get a bit wobbly, is the bike shop willing to work with you on either the price of the bike or a better wheelset?

A buddy just bought a Stumpjumper 29 a few months ago after doing a lot of homework. He hasn't had a problem yet even after a few falls.

I would think it would be model-specific. For example, is it the 2012 Stumpjumper 29 that has a bad wheel history?

FWIW, I have had several wheels done by Handspun, which is a division of QBP. They were quite nice and quite strong, which is a consideration at ~280 lbs. Salsa is also a division of QBP, and likely gets the wheels for their complete bikes through Handspun. Advantage: Salsa.

Were it me, the feel of the ride would be the #1 consideration, followed by the reliability factors. Advantage: Salsa, again.

I understand the Stumpy wheel issues were for previous year DT Swiss rims, but they now have Roval's. I know the guy who builds wheels for cycletherapy and he gave them the thumbs up. I have about 500 miles and they're fine so far.

Yarp, Mr. Billy. Rode his around the parking lot, felt good to me. Rode some other 29rs in the past and they felt too big, with an overly high COG. The stumpy felt nice though.

Having said all that about tires, Mr. Billy def. NOT over 220lbs. Something to consider..

Yeah the reach from seat to bars felt ok, but I felt like I was so high up in the air, reminded me of when i was like 12 and I'd ride my mom's 26" mountain bike around the neighborhood.

In the bikes defense it may be a large frame, I don't recall, and I am a medium frame, fairly low bottom bracket kind of guy, I like the longer lower bikes.

The ability to carry speed on the flats with the 29" wheels was however immediately evident.
