Remote Lock Out for Fox Shock? Worth it?

Postby black2003ss » April 18th, 2012, 2:21 pm

I am thinking about getting a remote lock-out switch for my front Fox shock. I have been doing a considerable amount of more dirt road riding this year, mixed in with single track. I have been learning on when to use the lockout feature on bigger hills and, to my surprise, it really does help, especially when standing while pedalling. I never really believed in using it, but the more miles I put in, the more I like having it, but don't like having to reach down and flip the switch. I think I might even use it on some single track climbs if I didn't have to take my hand off the handle bar to switch. How much do they typically run for a kit? Are they worth it? I'm leaning towards yes.

For what it's worth, I don't ever lock out my fork when riding dirt roads.

I have seen and ridden both. The remote switch is a great feature but only a few of Fox forks are capatible with the device.

And Steve, seriously, you never lock out your fork? Do you run the blow off really tight to make up for it?

Well, for me, I noticed an immediate difference in all of my power going into a stroke while standing up, and some improvement even while sitting, and felt slightly less fatigued after a couple of smaller climbs.

Nope. I've got the low speed compression damper set at something which works well for me and I get nearly no bob when pedaling. This coupled with not standing when on a FS when climbing (except for short/steep stuff) seems to work well for me.

Fox website shows an optional lock out kit for my shock. I'll order it through my LBS if I decide to get one. I just hope they aren't like $500 or something. I'm hoping around $150-200 plus install.

I have a Float 29 RL 15QR 100mm in case anyone was curious.

I lock out my fork and really don't see the practicality of spending the extra money for remote lockout. It's quite easy to reach down and turn the knob. However, if I had money to blow, there's no telling what I'd spend it on, but there are many other biking goodies I would rather have.

I don't mind reaching down and doing it on dirt roads, lots of room for error. On single track though, thought it might be nice to not have to take the hand off the bars or eye off the trail for even the split second it takes to reach down. Maybe I'm over thinking it...or being lazy.

Does anyone have remote lockout switches and like it? Wish they didn't have it?

I've never heard anyone complain about a remote lockout. I also don't lock out my fork on trails where I can't reach down to lock it out. ;-)

Ive had remote lockouts in the past, and to me they work fine.

Is it worth it? If you like the feeling of being locked out, or wanna shave seconds off a lap, id say go for it. I love climbing with a rigid/locked out fork.

I upgraded to the terralogix forks. Best fork I have ever owned. It locks and unlocks itself. Its awesome. (bit pricy though) You can get a reba upgraded with a "brain" which is their version. I doubt you can get your current fox internals upgraded, but im no expert.

I have one on my SID World Cup. I use it a lot. It comes very handy on short climbs when I don't want to loose momentum and I stand on the pedals lean forward and push hard. Mine is hydraulic so it is very easy to actuate. It is easier than switching gears. The only problem with it is that sometimes I forget to activate the shock back. If you have got the cash to burn, get one.

I have one on my FS Tomac, 2 actually, front and back, and I use them all the time. The Manitou switch is slick because it's a up and down deal and I can have a visual reminder I have my fork locked out. Way better than trying to preform acrobatics playing with my fork. I got mine for adventure racing on the road sections, much more efficient on hard surfaces.

for me ? no not worth it.

I don't ever lock out my fork or shock. I don't get a noticeable amount of bob or squish when it is unwanted.

Very true. I've heard "meh, I don't use it much" but never "I wish I didn't have it".

I never used the lock-out on any fork I ever had. With that, I ended up buying a fork that didn't have lock-out.
