Trail was in really good shape this afternoon. Cleaned up a bunch of deadfall, and moved some leaners out of the way on my laps this afternoon. Hardly anyone else out there, except for the one helmetless rider and his son, and the rider I laughed at after they had a slow speed wreck in the crater. Sorry bout that, but slow speed wrecks are funny, I do it all the time. :D

Looks like they have been aiming to make several new lines up and down the walls of the crater. I put some stick and logs in their path, but I doubt they will take the hint. If you are out there and see riders using un-approved lines, please ask them to cease and desist. We don't want to create new erosion paths and allow a free-for-all where riders can go where they like. If you see the sticks and logs have been moved, please block off the bandit lines again. After seeing that happen a few times, I hope they get the message.

The jokers are some local kids with bmx bikes, probably 10 years old or so. I ran into them last year, as they were moving logs onto the trail in that area. I asked them to stop doing that, and it seems to have worked. Their first response to me was 'but we ride here every day'. So I also told them about the MMBA, building/maintaining the trail, etc., but their eyes seemed to instantly glaze over. I doubt that moving a small pile of logs in there way will stop them as they will either move or ride over them. A large pile of logs or maybe 'fencing' that side of the crater might be the way to go.

The picnic table that is normally at the end of the crater is in now in the crater. I assumed the RHP staff moved it there(mowing?) but now I'm thinking that's not the case.

Well, I moved the picnic table back to it's original spot. They had moved it into the crater, in line with one of the 6 (or more) alternate lines they have created down the sides of the crater and were probably riding on it. I blocked all the alternate lines that I could find with deadfall (let's see how long that lasts), including one that l didn't really understand (it didn't look all that fun) that ran out the end of the flat section of the crater.

michael48197 wrote:The weather was perfect so the five man crew - Greg, Norm, Fred and Frank and I - made good progress on the trail building today. We were able to complete the 300 yard section of single track just N of the paved E-W path which will serve as the last section of trail. So, now instead of riding the paved path all the way back to the parking lot riders should turn N (left) on the paved path for ~30 yards and E (right) into the wooded treeline and follow the new single track back to the new park road will the single track spills back on the paved path. Finish by turning E (left) on the paved path and follow it around past the water park to the parking lot and trail head. I'm sure the loamy soil will be slow and bumpy at first, but it should ride in pretty quickly as with the rest of RHP when it was built.

The next part of the expansion project will be cutting trail though thick underbrush heading W along the fence line towards Munger Road. Once that 1/4 mile section is cut we can open it by using the west access road to return to the trail finish section. The remainder of the new trail in the NW section of RHP will be reasonably easy to cut as there is little undergrowth in that area. However, we won't be able to open that section up piecemeal, but only we the ~0.75 mile section is complete. Take a spin on the new trail and let me know what you think.

Thanks for the work guys, new trail section looks good! Got a few laps in this afternoon.

shopsonian wrote:I recently got back into mountain biking and discovered these trails, bonus that they are close to my house too. They are really great and those who built them have done a great job! I rode the 3 mile singletrack today, but from looking at these notes, it seems like there are more trails...how do I get to them? Also, if anyone wants to ride them after work or weekends sometime, let me know?

Steve

A new short section of trail was just cut-in, check michael's previous post for a good description of it's location and the new trail that has been marked, but not cut yet. I'm always willing to meet up for a ride. This week/weekend is not good, but let me know next time you plan on heading out.

Come on you all remember what that is dont ya?.If these kids ride there every day then get them and their parents involved in helping out.Do you really think telling them about the mmba 's involvment means a ratts ass to them?but getting you and the mmba to help build a bikepark that they could shred...might mean alot and get young life long members to carry the tourch.....just a positive easter thought.

In response to "Trailbandit", I'll say this: are you volunteering to lead the Skills Park project? I've solicited for help and leadership on the Skills Park for more than two years. Several people have expressed interest, but no one is willing to take an active roll to make it happen. Poto members know mountain biking and MTB trail building. We don't know BMX and skills riding and don't have the time, knowledge or inclination to learn. The RHP Skills Park will not happen for some time - maybe years - unless someone other than myself or Norm Roller takes the lead with coordination through me and RHP management. With family, home and work commitments, there's minimal time and energy on my end just to maintain and expand RHP MTB trails and none at this time for a Skills Park.

The MMBA wants to see kids on bikes whether they be BMX or MTB. However, the kids need to show respect for those who have provided access to places like RHP and abide by the rules. Maybe I'm jaded, but I doubt these BMX kids at RHP are willing to put in the sweat equity to do what is necessary to put together a real Skills Park. And they MUST have someone to lead them who is willing to become an expert or, at least, access experts in the engineering, SAFETY and materials needed for a Skills Park. So, if you or anyone else is willing to take the lead, I'd be happy to link you up with RHP management and help get the process started.

Rode a couple of laps after the trail day ,that was first, and I have to say Mike and Norm created a great tight and twisty trail. More laps, the faster you get. Not a beginner trail but with the bike path nearby a beginner could dab some sections once in awhile to get some time in to improve their bike handling skills.

Rode a few laps last night. The trail condition is awesome. In fact, the rain today will probably be helpful as the trail was getting dry in some locations. With the new finishing section, the trail now rides at 3.2 miles according to my "official" bike computer. Last night was the first time I got to ride the finishing section and I was surprised to see there had been minimal traffic on it thus far. It's a bit bumpy, but will smooth out with some traffic.

I'll call for a trail day to start on the next section either next weekend or the weekend after. I'll confirm here and in the Volunteers Needed forum once I sort out my personal schedule.

Rode RHP at 3PM after the rain. As usual the trail drains really well, no mud. I did a few laps and went back and forth on the new section at least six times with my Fatback. Not sure very many people will see that section being on the other side of that fence. Needs some signage.

I rode over about 11 yesterday. Debated riding the trail. Opted to stay on asphalt due to the rain. Can't wait to get back out and see the new sections.

Rode both Rolling Hills and Hewens Creek yesterday. Both in really good shape, just a bit of windfall that I was able to clear as I rode. No mud on Rolling Hills whatsoever. Couldn't find the new section though. Oh well, next time.

Sorry you missed the new section. I need to get a sign out there, but probably won't have time until next week.

After you complete the west fence line and hit the paved path (~3.0 miles), turn left (North) for 20 yards on the paved path and then turn right (East) across the grass on to the new section just at the edge of the tree line. You can't see it from the exit of the west fence section, but the new section runs parallel E-W to the paved path just a few yards into the tree line on the other side of the old wire fence.

I looked for the new section of trail for 20 minutes yesterday before I found it, it was so close to the end of the current trail I rode right past it a few times...

If you look at the map provided on michael48197's post of April 24th, 2011 you can see it. There are multi-colored lines detailing the expansion plans. The new trail section is the part of the pink line that goes from west to east. It is just off the current end of the trail, you basically make an immidiate right after the trail spits you out and just follow the tree line.

Rode it tonight. Is the new section just along the one stretch? The new section was real similar to how the new section was last year. It will come around. Felt good to be on the trail. I need to air down a little on the tires. Forgot how much you lose in the body motion after not being on the trail in a couple months..

See the photo map below for the location of the new section in PINK. As I noted, it runs parallel to the E-W paved path just inside the treeline N of the path. It is accessed at the end of the treeline a few feet N of the "Y" on the paved path as you exit the W fence section.

The next section will turn L around the corner and follow the fenceline W towards Munger.

Just got back from RH for the first time this year. Trail is in great shape. The new end section is gonna be cool. The little mounds at the start of that section caught me off guard.

Would have rode over to HC but I figured it would be too wet. I'll probably give it another day and catch it tomorrow.

Loved my new ride too - Giant XTC 29er 1. It's gonna be a great season!

I believe you were driving in as I was driving out, new black&white Giant 29r?

I did a couple laps, as usual the trail is in great shape after the rain. Only disturbing thing I noticed during my second lap were some new skid marks in the crater and one other descent, looks like they were made by a kid's bike. They were not there on my first lap. I found a pair of Chinese-made knockoff sunglasses on the trail, turned them in to the park. I'm thinking they've been there a few days, had water spots on them.

Took a ride through that service road going west, is that what is being refered to for "Munger Road"? Looks like more possibilities. Never realized how big that park really is.
