LOL! I am planning on riding there tonight. So is Orchard clear then? I'm not familiar with mile 14.5.

I think that's the climb right towards the end. The one which gets really sandy late in the summer, and the top is right at someone's back yard.

14.5 is after the log drop. It is a long up hill S curve, not the one at the end. U will see where logs have been cut in several places. I didn't ride orchard but the meadows was perfect except 1 soft spot at 7.5 right after the second rock pile.

The Orchard Loop is not clear! When it dries, it will be cleared.

Rode West, Lake, and North loops last night. The West Loop was in good shape sans a couple of soft spots that have somewhat widened out. The Lake Loop was in surprisingly phenomenal shape for the time of year, even the boardwalk area was dry. The North loop was 90% dry. There were a couple of big mud spots that were getting some cookie cutters and required slowing down, etc. It should be good to go in a few more days. There were a couple of head hunters that will probably be taken care of on trail day.

On a side note, the few new log piles that seemed to develop since last summer on the West Loop, are those here to stay or will they be removed on a trail day? Just curious. Most of them are easily passable like the one after the bridge that has always been there, but there is one that is a big chain ring killer...

I don't recall having to dismount at mile 14.5 or so. I only dismounted a couple of times to stare at the dandelions. Done East four times this week and have been getting jumped by little deadfall gang bangers lookin' to try and give my drive train a workin' over. I'm pretty sure they were wearing pinstripe suits and had tommy guns trained on my rear tire.

The only one I know of was on the Tech loop and that was left there cause it is the Tech loop and it was quite natural. The main 4 mile west loop shouldn't have any real log jumps or climbs other than the little one after the bridge which is made out of smaller sticks.

Hi Ron. There are two or three that have recently developed on the main west loop, possibly from a fallen tree and others just building them up with more logs to get over them.

I will plan on going out April 17 or 18 and clearing them and the Orchard. I cleared some of the Orchard last night when I rode Grubers, but will need the chainsaw at 10.5 and 11.5 and 13. Just assuming the nice weather is going to continue, that word assume may be bad. I will post a day or two ahead so if anyone can join please feel welcome. North has several head bangers and a couple on the West with logs down at .7 and 2.1

Rode North, West, and Lake loops tonight. North was 99.9% dry, just a couple head hunter trees down, some dead fall from winds. West and Lake were dry as well, a few trees down though. It was a nice ride.

Rode East on Sunday, but skipped the Orchard because I was already an hour and a half into the ride at the "<-- Orchard / Parking Lot -->" split and it takes me about 20 minutes to get back to the TH from there. Orchards probably would've added an hour and I was feeling a little beat. Trail was magnificent, dry and perfect. Lots of sticks and leaves in areas make it seem like it's not been ridden much yet this year - which is ok by me becasue it makes the trail more rustic than the West Loop. I cleared a 3-inch deadfall that was about number-plate high a little past the 2.5 mile mark (with my 3-inch Leatherman saw!).

Rode West today. Trail was 90% dry, and most of the wet was in the first mile.Another day or two without rain and it'll be back to perfect.

Gruber's grinder

Postby iamkickstand » May 7th, 2012, 8:06 am

I rode my semi-annual gruber's grinder grind yesterday. There is a tree blocking the trail just before the 12.5 mile mark just after the bridge. Otherwise the trail was in very good condition deadfall wise. A little muddy, but it usually is muddy anyway.

Any plans to get out there to remove the tree? I have a chainsaw, but don't have any idea how to get to that point on the trail "somewhat" quickly to remove the tree.
