I think about this on my occasional ride downtown on Jefferson. Once you cross the Rouge its like a ghost town. Except for all the rogue pittbulls.

Pretty sure adrenalin and my Felt F3 would give them a run for their biscuits. If I saw them coming that is.

S@!t for get pepper spray in vest in a 50. cal handgun, that should pretty much take care of anything you
come across.

Thanks for the heads up. I used to ride that loop quite a bit. I love the little punchy hill on Merkel.

My first lesson as adult dirt road rider (ex-paper boy): last year I was doing a shakedown ride with my sissy gear, 32-21. I won't make that mistake again, especially when riding on Napier Rd near Warren Rd (guy with crappie Big Foot trucks).

2nd lesson, not actually learned by experience, more "deep thinking" after another chase. Dogs like to come in from behind for the "kill". You need to hear them huffing and galloping to know it is on! An iPod gives the dog the element of surprise.

3rd lesson learned, was acquired this year. Check for presence of chaining bolts before ride :-/ Chased by "Pit-bull" near Sharonville SGA, after the escape sprint on my Mukluk, I heard a metallic tinking, looked down, last granny ring bolt was about to come out!

I have since bought an "air freshener" for those times when the sprint goes wrong. Would really like to get a frame pump with a weighted handle, for when the wind is blowing the wrong way.

"air freshener" I like that. One of my officer friends just showed my the latest version. Pepper Gel sticks to the
subject and no blowback/cross contamination.

We all have a built in weapon when riding. Its called an ICMB... Incredible Canine Bashing Machine! i.e. our bikes, if you pick up your bike and use it as a club, it will take out any dog. P.s. you're allowed to shoot a dog if you believe it's going to attack you.

This I'm aware of. Brother used to live near Ironwood, Mi. Few years back they had a real problem with
feral dogs not just one at a time, packs of 3 or more and they were not afraid of humans at all. They
were shoot on site if you seen them. This is when I bought my first "air freshener", for when I rode in that area.

You guys that are scared of a barking dog need to grow a pair. If doosh deezel ever pulled a knife on my dog, it would end up on the news. I would literally kill the guy with my bare fists. Unless you're riding in some dump like Detroit and being attacked by multiple stray dogs, don't pull a knife on a dog. Ever. I read these forums every day, have met lots of cool local and not so local mtbers, and bought and sold tons of parts. Lots of cool people but these "i was attacked and needed to use deadly force" people ( person) whatever are lame.

By the way, about six years ago I was working ( paramedic) in Warren and was on the call, everyone dreads : pediatric cpr. Big dog (full grown rottweiler) vs. tiny infant. Massive head trauma, normally would pronounce on scene... but transported and tried to recuss... without success.

The family was having a white trash trailer party. I don' t know any history of the dog. It could have had a warm bed with a loving family... or it could have lived its life being neglected and unloved ( don't even get me started)... but it was literally TEN TIMES THE SIZE of the victim.

My sister is a DVM and my girlfriend a LVT. I am in no way some ignorant dog lover. I know the facts. I've got a big scar on my nose from a dog bite (pit bull that belonged to the trashiest of trash neighbors of mine. It saw no love and only neglect. It didn't love me either when I was trying to give a treat to its new puppy " sibling".

I could have sued, but didn't. The dog would just suffer and the people would just get another.

Be a man... or if you' re a woman, don't be a wimp. And never pull a knife on a pet unless you're like that poor child and the dog is ten times your size.

Go to a dog park and get over your fear. Dogs bark at bikes. You probably could have stopped and pet him.

Man up fer cryin out loud. Lastly, i hope noone does this knife stunt. You're gonna get yourself killed.

I'm not afraid of dogs at all, and am a huge dog lover, stop all the time to pet them on trails. but if one charges or attacks me (not just barks/annoys me, and not an annoying ankle biter) i'm going to take it out by any means possible (bike, knife, gun, stick) and it will be 100% legal. And owners be damned, if they really cared, they'd keep their dogs well trained and under control, and if they cant handle that, then the dog needs to be locked up and kept away from the general public PLAIN AND SIMPLE, NO EXCUSES. A dog can mess someone up big time, child or adult, and I'm not going to go get stitches and rabies shots bec of some dumb #@$ owner... IT’S A DOG.

I've seen a number of videos of viscous pitpulls taking people down. Many times the victims were large full grown men. It's amazing how strong dogs really are when they are fully in attack mode. That's why police use them to take down fleeing criminals.

So I'm not sure what Aard is suggesting people should do when they are attacked. Personally I'm going to use whatever means I have at my disposal tostop the dog as quickly as possible. If that means the dog dies, the dog dies. If the dog's owner then tries to attack me as aard suggests, he's going to get the same response the dog got.

aard is right- I should just "sack-up" and let the dog attack me because there is no way a 70 lb dog intent on attacking all 150 lbs of me could ever do any damage I admit that it was stupid of me to chase the dog into the guy's yard (only because it was trespassing- it sure as *beep* sent a clear signal to both the dog and the owner), but I will use my knife, my bike, a big rock or anything else to protect myself when on the road or trail.

I quit smoking so I've been cranky and mean. Not over the hump yet. What is considered " attacking" though? Dogs will run after cars or bikes... or whatever. They also bark. A dog that is running towards you barking is not " attacking" you. Is that what you think?

I think that since he had my boot in his teeth, and I had to kick with that foot to get him to release, I would be justified in say I was attacked. I have been bitten before, my daughter has a permanent scar from a neighbor's "nice" dog, and my wife is disfigured from a dog bite to her face. We will have to agree to disagree, but you will not convince me that a dog that shows aggression towards any human is anything other than a dangerous weapon, and should be dealt with as such.

A large Shepard got ahold of your pedaling foot and inflicted no damage?
My family had a Shepard and when she was attack trained the only thing that got her off the guy in the suit was my dads command.
