I can guarantee it will be a slop fest. We've had rain past couple days and temps remain above freezing. I wouldn't do anything but pavement on Saturday. Sunday early am looks promising with 25 overnight.

A big thanks to all the douche bags who have been riding when the trail was soft. I haven't ridden a real trail in 6 weeks due in part to illness, but mostly out of respect for the trails. The endless ruts and pizza cutters made for a very novel experience.

I've been out there for the last several weeks - riding the gravel pit on my fatbike. The really odd thing is the sand out there is now deep as it normally gets around summertime. Not normal at all for winter, or even the warm temps we've been having. Typically when it gets around 40F out there the sand is a bit firmer. I walked a couple portions of the trail today, mix of bumpy ice, mud and firm ground, glad I can ride deep sand. I do see quite a few people out riding the trail. That slop section by the roadside bridge before the Springmill Pond would be enough for me, no thanks.

Trail was good this morning, but likely too soft now. Studs not needed although some ice on yellow. Nicely packed groove whereever the snowmobiles didn't go. Was totally solid except along tracks and yellow past the bride starting to thaw around 10am on my 2nd lap. Sun is out in FULL force!

got two laps in this morning, too, before the thaw. strange reading on my endomondo/gps program: 2600 feet of climbing in 26 miles. that can't be right. has anyone ever charted the ascent/climbing total at island lake?

260 maybe :) The Highland map claims about 2100 vertical for 16 miles ~ 130/mile. So 2600 or 100/mile sounds a bit high for ILRA.

It depends on how you count it, and how accurate your GPS's altimeter is. That does not sound unreasonable if you count ALL the little ups and downs on a trail.

Metro South: Island Lake

Here's a screen grab from a ride on the blue loop at Island Lake. It's pretty consistent with my normal rides there. I did notice that Endomondo was acting up today....

Did blue and yellow loops this morning and the trail was solid until the end of the yellow loop at 1120 am. trees down at 8 mile mark and 8.3. Many frozen ruts.

The App is Endomondo. Works great, you can challenge friends, uploads to their website automatically (endomondo.com) when you're done with a workout and keeps track of all your rides/workouts/etc. Highly recommend it.

How is the trail looking for a Thursday or Friday ride? I imagine with yesterdays rain, most trails will be a no go...
