Snakes snakes snakes

Postby SlowPoke » November 3rd, 2011, 12:06 am

We had several ride sin the last few weeks where snakes were out sunning in the trail.

This was probably the coolest looking snake I have ever caught. We let him go after a few pictures.

Blue racers are beautiful--and they can get pretty big! We saw one at Custer a few years ago that was just stretched across a narrow bit of trail with its head and tail in the brush. I thought it was a log til I bumped my front tire over it and it squirmed! I hollered "Snake!" to warn my buddy behind me who it turned out was phobic and he turned himself inside out trying to stop before he got to it. Hilarious and as far as I could tell the snake wasn't injured--I'd lifted the front tire to hop over it, so I didn't hit it hard.
Sometimes the squeaky wheel gets replaced.

Just be glad your in Mi and not Tx, we have lots of copper heads, cotton mouths, and a few rattlers. I't rare in teh spring and cooler summer days I don't see a snake if I go for a long ride. In fact I have seen as many as 20 at one of our water crossings. WE even have one of our Monthly meetings where we have a herpatologist come in and show us all the local snakes, and give advice on how to take care of a bite......Not to mention the scorpions, balck widows, trantulas, and brown recluses...man sometimes I miss Michigan.

Everytime we are riding and we see a snake on the trail, SlowPoke goes Steve Irwin on them

I rode by a big blue racer last fall at the Big M. It was halfway into the trail curled up with its head up just chillin'. There was nothing cool or beautiful about it....I HATE snakes. I was by myself so no one was there to laugh at me for letting out a minor shriek. I do remember trying with all my might to pull up my foot while I rode by it but my stubborn cleat wouldn't let go of my pedal.

I rolled over a copperhead on a trail when I lived in Kansas. I thought it was a stick, then saw it move funny when I hit it, so I stopped and walked back to look and he was sitting right in the middle of the trail. As I was looking at him, a trail runner came up behind me - he might have stepped on the snake if I hadn't gone back to check it out.

That thing actually left an bite mark in my tire where he struck at me. I thought the wolf spiders were bad out there (you never wanted to be the first one on the trail in the morning), but that snake scared me from getting off the bike much on the trails.

I'll make up for no one being there to laugh: HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Feel better? Seriously, snake phobias can really get to some people. Some of the toughest guys I ever knew were totally afraid of snakes and at the mere mention of snakes, they screamed like little girls and ran out of the building and wouldn't return the rest of the day.

Ugh. I don't miss riding in Texas even a little. I was only there one summer, but it's all dust and gravel and snakes. Not a bit of tacky singletrack to be had. At least, not near San Antonio.

From a Lake Erie Beach ride last year:

Image

The guy in the background stopped me to show me this snake he found that swam ashore from the lake. I first that it was a Water Snake, but rather it appears to be a pretty large Ribbon Snake.

Not a good pic, but then it's not a good idea to try to get an Australian Brown Snake to pose:

There were several signs in the Aussie nature park I was at warning to walk along the trail as there are snakes around. I was about six feet from it, used a telephoto to get the shot. Walked right passed it, never seen it until my relative stopped to look at it.

I saw a HUGE freakin' snake this afternoon at the Fort Custer Stampede. It was scooting across the trail, just in front of me and another rider. If it weren't for the fact that we were racing, I might have let out a little scream. It must have been an anaconda (translation: it was a 6ft something or other).

Was it black? Might be a Rat Snake. They are rare, but I've seen one at ILRA while fixing a flat. They can get up to 8 feet, the one I seen was about 5-6"

I thought that I saw a snake during the race, but I didn't look too closely. It's a good thing too cause I hate snakes!

I was riding Novi one spring a couple years ago when I saw a garter snake cross the trail. I stopped and soon realized that there were hundreds of them crawling all over. They must have been coming out of the den for the summer.
