good SE michigan terrain for training

Postby 3d » August 22nd, 2011, 8:40 am

looking for some decent two-track for some smooth(er than singletrack) off road riding on my cx bike. I know novi has some 2-track running up the center of the park, do any other local parks have similar?
in it to ride, not to accessorize.

Orion Oaks is pretty smooth. Kinda flat, but there's a couple hills, and there's long sections where you could really hammer.

Why not hammer out some dirt roads?

Stony Creek has a nice 2 track loop. A few miles in length and you can keep doing laps.

i live 5 blocks from the detroit river, not many dirt roads down this way, and not sure which direction to drive to find one in the hinterlands

this is a little out of the SE Michigan metro detroit area, but Rob Pulicpher book is an AWESOME guide to roads tailor made for CX bikes:

You mentioned Novi, there is many miles of dirt road slightly north and west of Novi................try those for riding. Take Maple to Milford and north and south. Google Maps can help you find specifics

Olsen Park in Ann Arbor is a cool place, typically very few riders out there. It's a bunch of shorter MTB trials all connected by a paved trail around the pond, some short clapped out gravel uphills that you can use as a run up. You can cook up a bunch of different practice routes.

+1 for Dirt Road Washtenaw, I do the Dirt Hammer route at least once a week for awesome cyclocross training.

Also, Island Lake mtb trail is a great place fr the cross bike. Very smooth so it doesn't beat you up, but a great course to get your bike handling skills down (and learn more about how your cross bike handles) and lots of short, steep uphills similar to what you'd find on the tailwind cross courses.

Hilly dirt roads work well, as others have mentioned. Northern Oakland County (google map Fox Lake Road, Markwood Road, Dutton Road for some "fun"). I don't get out to Washtenaw County to ride, but there is some nice terrain out that way.

Make sure you practice dismounts and remounts for barriers, as well as off-camber corners in grass.
