Ferndale, Royal Oak, B'ham riding suggestions

Postby rocky roooad » July 14th, 2011, 10:00 pm

Does anyone have a good route mapped out for riding in Ferndale, Royal Oak & Birmingham area? It would be nice to do a local ride sometime if I can't make it to the trails. Or does anyone know of any group rides in this area?

Road, dirt, sidewalks?

FWIW, try using Google Maps' bike directions and add destinations. It is pretty good at preferring bike-friendly routes. There's a butt-load of older subdivisions in those communities that should offer fairly safe passage.

the east side of woodward thru birmingham has some good riding,
lots of sidestreets N/S go for a while, i like the half mile roads for E/W myself
as uta said, google it, or maybe call american cycle &fitness on woodward
they do a road ride in winter from the shop and know some great routes

also, wednesday nites, continental bikes has a casual road ride
usually ferndale/RO down thru palmer woods/park and back
(with the option of a post ride snack and beverage of choice)
being from the eeeside, that's all i got

I've done this Green Cruise ride, though the large group can be frustrating. It is still a good route in the area keeping you off of Woodward for the most part. I enjoyed it more when I later followed the route on my own. That actual ride is this Saturday and they also have a longer route going downtown.

The Wolverine Wednesday ride from Royal Oak Library at 6:30 follows a nice route thru B'ham to Cranbrook. Can be done on road or mtn bikes. There is also one from Beverly School on Sat AM that goes thru some nice roads up to West Bloomfield.

There is a faster road ride from Derby school at 6:30 on Tuesdays - goes up thru Auburn Hts to Chrysler Tech center and Oakland U.
