New Stihl FS 55 R Line Trimmer

Just in time for the upcoming Addison Oaks Trail Day the Metro North chapter now has a new, high quality, dedicated line trimmer in the chapter trailer. On Pete / PK's recommendation (and after having tried his), we purchased a Stihl FS 55 R straight shaft line trimmer. This will nicely compliment the Stihl KombiSystem that we already have, allowing us to run either two line trimmers or one trimmer and one brush cutter in parallel.

If you've ever wondered where your membership dollars and monies raised during the chapter benefit race go, this is one of the places. Money from this is spent to buy the tools that volunteers use to keep our trails nice.

Stihl makes a pretty good machine. For future purchases, I'd recommend the bike handle grip - saves the back when cutting larger areas.

The bike handle grips are on brush cutters and clearing saws, not the line trimmers.

Actually, this model is available in both loop and bicycle handle style. For what it's worth, it's pictured that way on the front page of the owner's manual. I contemplated the other style, but having never used one I wasn't sure.

Line trimmers used in the woods are very often used in a "up and down" motion. It's the encroaching brush rather than growing grass that needs the trimming most often.
I doubt that the handle bars would help much and I GUESS that they would just impede the mobilitly of the trimmer. Many times, we'll be using the trimmers overhead and reaching well back off the trail and as a result, I don't even use the shoulder harness....

Bring the bike bar trimmer out on Saturday to Addison and we'll do some comparing :D

I think about a 5 hour test should resolve any questions

I went by the Stihl website. They don't show any trimmers with cycle handles, nor do they show it as an option. I blame the website!

But, Pete sort of brings up a good point. With the cycle handles, you have to use a shoulder strap.

If you're trimming at all kinds of funky angles, than the loop handle may be superior. Although, I've cut some pretty tangly nasty stuff with a bike handle trimmer/brushcutter with no problems.

Nothing like a side by side comparison to sort it out.
