Pictures/video from riding White Mesa in New Mexico!

Postby 2WheeledWarrior » January 1st, 2009, 3:00 pm

I visited my parents in New Mexico over the holidays and a friend who is a local rider showed me some sweet singletrack and the glory of White Mesa. I had to talk him into riding there because of the single digit temperature, heavy winds and associated windchill in the negatives. It was so cold, my Dad's diesel engine wouldn't start when we were done.
We started and managed to stay warm enough until we were shielded from some of the wind and, eventually, the wind died down some. We had to take some layers off!

Chris starts out on the inner loop trail:

Chris, from a distance, on a ridgeline:

Amazinbgly, this is on top of a ridge!

Me, taking in the view. The grassland below was a dark shade of red, which is a beautiful contrast with the orange and tan earth tones of the rock...and add in the white of the gypsum rock, too, it made for a gorgeous scene.

Chris gets ready to ride a technical descent.

...and he's off!

Chris approaches the sharp right turn...

He's turning...
Image

...and he doesn't make it...hits the rock on the far side.
Image

Chris goes down the last part of the descent into the valley.
Image

Chris crosses the valley floor after the descent.
Image

It may look like a wheelie, but this is the begining of a jump I made. There were several natural jumps to add some spice.
Image

One sweet line!

Chris at the top of a hill with the Sandia Mountains clearly in the distance at over 30 miles away. A very clear day.

It's not a great trail in New Mexico without some scarey exposure!

A great shot of gypsum rock. There is a salt mine on top of White Mesa, which is nearby.

These pictures are from one of two cameras. I'll post more in a few days with video, too.

I'm so jealous I could puke, oh, no wait, I'm still hung-over and feeling the after affects of a tazing from G.R.'s finest.

But I am jealous. Man I miss the west. Thanks for the pics!

This may be sacrilege, but those trails look more fun than some of the trails in Moab. Great pics man!

Great shots! Looks like the terrain we have here and it sounds like similar temps, just with all the snow we have subtracted! Ahh..... long live the base miles riding on the road bike.......

Here are the videos!

The wind is apparent in this video...but not nearly as rough as when we started out.
