Winter ride'n today

Postby G.Cook » November 16th, 2008, 8:37 pm

Got in a rail trail , dirt road ride out to the Poto trail head and it was snow , round trip .
Started out more wet and muddy , but 20 min.'s into the ride and any more snow we would have had white conditions going down Monk's and Kelly Rd.'s .
It was that heavy , wet , clingy kind oof snow that kind of muffles the sound out of everything .
By the time I got to the trail head it looked to be an inch or more . When I turned around to head home it started coming down with big heavy flakes Half way home I had snow piling up on the top of my shoes . I could have taken one of those bike tracks in the snow shots , but ah , no camera .
Going down Monks Rd. a Red Tailed Hawk glided out over head , silently going about his business in the woods . That was the high light . 8)
Didn't ride any of the Poto . Way to much rain the last couple of days . This alternate circuit I do isn't all that bad for off trail riding days . It's got some good climbs as I think the dirt rd.'s traverse some of the same ridglines that the Poto travels . Which means a half way decent workout for an old fart , fat butt like myself .
I had good ride on the Monkey ( yeah ,I ride a 29er :P ) . Hope some of you all got out today to play in the snow .
Have Mcleod , will travel .

Likewise! On the west side of the state we had similar weather. A ride at Robinettes Farm rousted two does and a flock of Mallard ducks and we had the same eery, nice quiet of a heavy snowfall. Great time! :D

A few days ago, I noticed the forecast for snow, so I posted up a ride. We rode, today. It was fun. :-)

I also got a ride in at Burchfield...threw my red wings jersey on over my jacket to hopefully dissuade any blind drunk hunters, but I only heard a couple of gunshots during the entire ride. Had the entire place to myself. The singletrack was wet but firm, that being said I still had mud tracks up my legs and back. I stopped at the pond and soaked in the quiet for awhile, the surface reflected the surrounding woods and the water was so clear you could see the fallen leaves at the bottom. The snow just clung to everything ... so quiet and peaceful. Afterwards I picked my kids up from a younglife weekend and some other parents who know me (or thought they knew me, heh...) confirmed in their heads what they had thought all along...as several of them came up to jokingly ask if I was really going to ride my bike. When I got out i my muddy clothes and told them I already had 8) 8)
yeah, 52 and still acting like a kid...I love it.

rode from stony out to addison and back.
snow flakes in the lot while we got ready - perfect
more snow as we rode to addison - perfect
a little cover of snow in the woods at addi - perfect
trails slick and leave covered - perfect
back to stony and into the pines,
slid sliding away
all in all - perfect

stud 'em up kids.

Living closer to the D than most trails I head downtown during questionable weather. You can make a ride there most anything you want it to be and on weekends the place is yours. Sun. I also put up some pheasant in the Conner -Jefferson area.
