Milford Trail

Postby Builder-Bill » January 6th, 2007, 1:18 am

Finished removing all the trees that DTE cut and piled up on the trail. The trail is open and in good shape as of 1/5/2007.. It drains like Highland.

Rode Today

Postby Steve_Balogh » January 27th, 2007, 11:39 pm

Riding fresh "packing snow" was quite a chore. I would have been better off without the studded tires. No other bikes, the only tracks were a couple hikers and one XC skier, who didn't always follow the marked MTB trail, so many sections I was riding fresh snow. I had to hike many sections, made a pretty good workout. This trail is pretty nice, I'm definitley going to do more of this one when it warms up.

XC- skied the Milford trail back words, with a few friend on Sat. . That was twitted fun, the song Pin ball wizard kept playing in our heads, as we bounced of trees.  It Beat Us. Had to bale out early, a broken pole did us in.

2/17/07 Ride

Postby Steve_Balogh » February 17th, 2007, 6:48 pm

I attempted to ride this trail today, studded tires were a bad choice, I immediately went back and switched to my 2.5 DH tire for the front wheel. That worked a little better, but the snow is so deep I couldn't get any momentum.

I met Bill's friend with the snowmobile who was trying to pack down the trail for tomorrow, but he could not get at every section. Perhaps the runners should start tomorrow's event?

I went to ILRA and Maybury afterwards, more of the same.

Thanks Steve. I'm not so sure I want to ride it if the snow is not packed down. It's just a hike-a-bike at that point and I don't sport any 2.5 DH tires.

:( Too bad. I was looking forward to riding.

I may still show up. I need to swap out the rear tire, which is best done on my bike stand because of the brake adapter that just barely fits this old frame. My studded tires stick to deep snow pretty bad. Remember what Robert used to do in these situation for PB Races? Pull a load of rocks/heavy object on a flat "sled" with his ATV.

I'm not familar with the whole trail system, but there might be an alternative route to use. The first 1/4 mile section was also a bit nasty three weeks ago, but the rest of the trail was rideable. There's a festival going on in Milford, you have to take a detour to get there from my direction coming up north from Canton. Don't want to scare anyone off,
perhaps the organizers have a "Plan B" if conditions aren't suitable. I would be game for a short course if possible.

I just called Bill.............

Postby Steve_Balogh » February 17th, 2007, 8:57 pm

.......looks like I got there too early, a few people with snowshoes went out there to stomp it down some more - and tomorrow the bikers will go out after the runners and hikers. The trail has been marked off with bail-out sections.

Bill tells me I was one of three bikers that finished. Quite a few bailed 1/3 of the way where there was a place set up to do so. The snow was too deep or too soft. The longest ride I had was the downhill along the fence, I maybe got about 30-40 feet before having to walk again.

Turned out to be a major hike-a-bike adventure on a nice sunny day.

Trail Conditions at Milford

Postby LindaK » February 25th, 2007, 4:37 pm

I walked the first half of the trail at Milford. It is much different than it was last week. Most of it is ridable now for really good riders with studded tires. The snow was packed down by 50 pairs of feet last week forming a bumpy trail. Now that the sun has come out, the top portion of the hard packed snow has a thin layer of ice on the top. If you want to bail off follow the green arrows. Be sure to look for the brown six foot post that points you back to the parking lot.

Not rideable

Postby Steve_Balogh » March 5th, 2007, 12:06 am

Could you believe I found snow so deep in some spots it came up to my knees? Complete opposite of ILRA and Maybury. This could be the last resort for other trail users this week.

Trail not rideable at all. Only some foot traffic on the two track. The trail was untouched. Serious hike-a-bike today.
