Postby killercarbon98 » September 11th, 2006, 10:36 am

Lots of great comments. rain really setting new trail in. There is a large tree down at the bottom of phase 1 rework. created a route out and around. still needs a little clip'n to create a bigger arc but lookn good.

Does the Ski Area close ever?
It's not a bike, it's a message.

I'd rather ride my bike than operate it.

This is not a business, it's a hobby out of control

Yes - the closer to ski season it gets. Seems like last year it was shortly after Thanksgiving (I might have ridden out there Thanksgiving weekend 1 day if I remember correctly)??? Probably depends alot on if we have consistent cold temperatures so they can make snow.

Yea - They want us to stay out when they start working with the snowmaking equipment, even setting it up before making snow.
I bet it will be getting busy for riding out there soon, since the game area is closing. Thursday is last day to ride there.

Cannonsburg Ski Area closes to riding November 11th for hunting season and ski property maintenance in preparation for the ski season.
This is private property and we have been fortunate to ride there. Please obey the request of the owners on this enforcement. It will re-open once the ski season has ended. They prefer we don't ride there during ski season even if the mtb trails don't have snow. ie: don't ride across the base of the ski hills covered with snow and skiers to get to the dry mtb trails!

The Ski his was buff last night. All the the new trail is flowing smooth.

With Egypt Valley closed for the season for no good reason, Cannonsburg Ski Hill is the place to ride!

Just rode the ski area last night and it was all in good shape after the rains. No stagnant water anywhere on the trail really, but there are a few slippery corners that just add to the fun!

Edit: forgot to add there is a section with some downed trees that cuts off a small loop. Took us all a second to figure out what happened and which direction the trail continued. The sections are too new in there to give any discriptors to narrow down the area... except it is somewhere in the middle  .

Good work on the trail day yesterday. The downed trees were certainly a load to get cleared out. I was out of town and not around to help.

I road the trail today. I profess no trail building knowledge so I am posting this to try to understand the reasoning or technique behind some of the work that was done.

It seemed like quite a bit of the off-camber portions of the trail had the down hill side of the trail shaved and/or dug out. It created a lot of areas where the downhill edge of the off camber trail was extremely soft and sketchy when it had formed into nice singletrack before. Is this a technique done purposely that allows the trail to reform bigger, better, stronger, etc etc?

Thanks

redrabbit. the downhill edge (berm) was never part of the original cut. As the trail gets used it forms from the loose soil being pushed to the downhill side by tires rolling along. It was removed to allow water to flow off the trail instead of following the trail and ultimately causing errosion. This occassional and proper maintenance will become more commonly seen at all trails in the area.

Interesting. I noticed this on Sunday also. At first I thought it was the result of many people riding off trail (overshooting turns). Later I noticed a pattern to it and realized it was done on purpose yet I still had no idea why. Thanks for explaining this.

I also want to say thanks to everyone that worked on this trail over the summer. I just moved in about a half mile from the trail. When I heard of the planned changes my initial reaction was that the trail would be ruined. I was sure that all of the challenges that make this trail special would be removed. After I rode it, I realized just how wrong I was. The new trail is challenging, fun and hopefully more sustainable. I really wanted to help out with the work but none of the dates worked for me this year. Last Saturday was my anniversary, I got in trouble with my wife just for mentioning that I wanted to help out that day. Next year I'll be there for sure though!

Rick,

I realized it the burms were formed up by riding the trail. I did not consider the erosion of the trail by rainfall being collected and running down it in those areas even though I had noticed such erosion on the first climb in prior rides. Thanks for the work.

Cramer-

there will be many more chances next summer. We have a ton of work yet to be done out there and expect to add mileage in the process.
