There are going to be as many varied replies as there are members here, nearly. Your best bet is to get a set of something you can afford, and go from there. You will decide what you like as you ride them. I started last year with some IRC mythos on my XC, and they are great, but are weak in the corners, and a bit too soft on pavement, as they wear quickly there. I use some worn out Moab Sweet Rolls on my play bike, they are sticky and seem good on pavement, but that is not a xc bike, it only hits dirt jumps and few trails, if I can avoid it. Also, it is fully ridgid.
Check out the panaracer fires, they are a good long lasting tire, with good traction.
