Tires

What would be good tires to put on a mountain bike for riding on paved roads, dirt roads, and gravel roads?

Exactly. Check out some tires that arent super knobby, anything ought to do nicely. Paved, gravel and general dirt roads arent very demanding of bike tires. Bet you could pick up a set at the expo tomorrow pretty cheaply.

How about the Continental Goliaths? Anyone have any experience with those?

Ritchy

Ritchy Alpha/Omega Speedmax. I've had great luck with them on and off road. Just the normal kevlar bead. Not the WCS, unless you've got money to spare. They really rail on pavement.

Well, On my Urban/DS rig I use the Maxxis Larrsen TT. It has a lot of grip in the hard pack, and rolls really fast. Ive been using them for about 8 months now w/ over 100 miles of pavment abuse and count less laps eles-where and there is still lots of tread left.

There are going to be as many varied replies as there are members here, nearly. Your best bet is to get a set of something you can afford, and go from there. You will decide what you like as you ride them. I started last year with some IRC mythos on my XC, and they are great, but are weak in the corners, and a bit too soft on pavement, as they wear quickly there. I use some worn out Moab Sweet Rolls on my play bike, they are sticky and seem good on pavement, but that is not a xc bike, it only hits dirt jumps and few trails, if I can avoid it. Also, it is fully ridgid.
Check out the panaracer fires, they are a good long lasting tire, with good traction.

I miss my WTB Nanoraptors. I felt those were the best tires I've over for a wide variety of conditions. I now have Michelin Jet's, which are real decent in all but loose or slick conditions.

superdreadnought, about your question on Continental Goliaths,
I have been running them on my "road" mountain bike for years
and they are a really good tire for pavement, dirt roads and I've
taken them on Maybury and Island Lake trails before with just a
little bit of slippage when wet. The only drawback that I've
encountered is the wire beads, they tend to be harder to get off/
put back on when you get a flat, but on the upside, they last a
long time and roll really smooth. (natural rubber compound)

Another semi-slick tire that I've heard good things about (review
in Mountain Bike Action) and are cheap($15) is the Kenda Kwest which doesn't have the side knobs that the Goliath does and also has wire beads, but is a good all round tire. I'm going to get a set of those one of these days and check 'em out. Semislicks really
cut out the rolling resistance that a knobby has. Good Luck.
I love mountain biking because I haven't found anything that is more FUN !!
Of all the paths you choose in life....make sure some of them are DIRT !!

Commuting miles in 2012 = 1065
Total road/trail miles = 2800
Number of rides = 152
Trails ridden = 28 different in MI, 2 in Oregon
