macomb/oakland trails to run

Postby Wolverine » April 19th, 2011, 12:39 pm

Other than the metro/state parks, can anyone recommend a local park for trail running? I'm not looking to log high miles, just someplace close to home for short runs during the week.

No rail to trail. I kills me mentally to see all that open trail passing so sllloooowwwwllllyyyyy. I like the Madison Heights Nature Center and Nelson Park on Maple, but I'd also like to find something non-paved.

So where are your local running spots?

I can tell you that River Bends gets a bunch of trail running use. The single track would be good for it but has hills, and the two track is nice looking and twisty but very flat.

Dodge/Clinton River Park is fairly close, but mostly paved (though you can run the singletrack where it isn't mud :P). Probably the next best is Bloomer.

But don't take my word - ask Katie/Bridges or Kristi/misscrashalot as they would have a better handle on places to run.

Bloomer is a very popular. They have a few 5 K courses and and my main running location, why drive to Stony or elsewhere

Are you looking for a dirt path or a dirt trail?

FWIW I personally found the torn shirt loop at Brighton rec to be a real PITA to run. :icon_aaargh:

FWIW I personally found the torn shirt loop at Brighton rec to be a real joy to run so you should be optimistic about your odds of surviving the Half Torn Shirt du that you're so obviously attempting to train for.

Why Thank You Eric! How wonderful to hear such encouraging words :P

I don't know what you mean about dirth path or dirt trail :?

Bloomer's looking like my closest option.

don't forget the bloomer stairs
there is even a counter for keeping track of how many times you climb

Sorry but when I asked at the racers meeting the day defore the race about why we don't ride torn shirt the answer was most triatheletes can't ride it, but almost anyone can walk it. I wasn;t very well trained for it though. more milage than I had ever done so i was spent after the 1st mile or two.

Bloomer is a great place to train for it. True race training would be park outside the park say under the bridge. run one mile one way return for bike ride a lap or so of bloomer then ruturn bike run in and run a lap. the 1st run is camp road and so is the start and finish of the ride, and the 1st bit of the real run.

The differece in my mind is are you looking for flat Stony 2 track type stuff or training for the torn skirt du?

Well I'd love to find Torn Shirt training right in my backyard, but that's not going to happen. Realistically, I'm looking for anything non-paved close to home or work.

Are you talking about the bridge at the Letica Rd RtT lot? That sounds like a good plan for Bloomer on a Saturday.

I was also thinking about doing a Stony 2 track run before some of the Wed night rides (park at the hole in the fence, run, then drive back to the high school to meet up for the ride). That is, if the weather and my husband's travel schedule ever give me the chance to ride

For the record, I'm glad we aren't riding Torn Shirt in the Du. As much as I love it, it wouldn't leave me with anything left for the run and those stupid uphill log piles get me everytime!

I was actually thinking the Diversion rd lot which is under the Rochester rd bridge. It's about a mile into Bloomer from there. About halfway aka post warm up there you could run the CRT singletrack just east of the Letica lot when that ends cross over the trail into the river trails and into the park proper.as see here

There is lots of great trails out there to run.

Why get in the car just ride up or wait at the fence. :?:

Because I'd feel silly using up limited parking for longer than necessary and I'd get antsy waiting

FWIW, I usually park on Kennebunk St. (just south of the "hole" in the fence).

Oh, and maybe some decaf for that "antsy" thing. :D

Well, crap! I'm going to have to do exactly that now just to prove that I wouldn't collapse in a pile of snot. I'll still collapse, but darn it, I'll do it in a puddle of sweat not snot
What are the odds of a break in the weather Saturday?

Back to the original topic though...I'm convinced there has to be some sort of trail along Red Run or other local parks. Anyone know?
