Thought about heading up via Canada to upstate NY, but from the responses I've been getting, I'll reconsider. Getting there is 1/2 the fun and we definitely want a cool, scenic route for most of the drive, if possible.

Thx. for your input!

I've made the drive and visited Maine 3 times - it's beautiful and quite amazing. If you have time, visit Baxter State Park and climb Mt. Katahdin. http://mtkatahdin.com/It is one of the most challenging hikes you'll ever do, and one of the most spectacular. It will take all day. The park and area is beautiful and you'll see lots of moose. You may want to take a white water trip on the Penopscott River... it's a blast. http://www.northernoutdoors.com/site/rafting/penobscot_river.html. Acadia is really cool and the town is, too.

Have fun! One of my favorite places on earth.

I think I can help you out here. Went to College in southern VT, Lived in Boston for many many years, Parents live 1/2 hr south of Acadia (been there many times) been to Katahdin highest point on AT and there are things you will need to do prior if going to Baxter State Park. I am also a avid home brewer and can suggest breweries and beers to try as well as spots to check out. I will send you a PM

When are you heading out there?

this may help you out

Baxter State Park fills up quickly and its not like going to say Island Lake where you just drive up, park and play. I strongly suggest you make a reservation prior to heading out there. Once the park is full, they turn you back or to another section. I would hate to see someone drive all the way there just to be turned away.
For camping

Like any park be familiar with the rules of the park. The website will hopefully answer many of your Q as there is something there for all levels of hikers, climbers, campers...

Most important have fun and enjoy Baxter State Park
