Detailed Poto Trail Map?

Postby irish » February 26th, 2011, 8:58 pm

Does anyone have a detailed trail map of Poto? I'm hoping to ride it regularly this coming season, and the one time I road it last season I made at least one wrong turn (or possibly several) I think and ended up not really taking the trail any further. I had printed off the map from the website, but I found it lacking detail and there was too much distance between distinguishable trail features to be able to determine proper routing at multiple points. Ideally the trail map would be formatted to fit either a single or double sided 8.5x11.

Thanks.

The first time I rode it I got turned around as well. The best bet would be to ride with someone that is familiar with the trail. Once you ride it once or twice it is pretty easy to follow. I live near the trail and once the spring thaw is over I will be riding it a few days a week if you want to meet up.

Below is a link to my garmin of the full trail. You can zoom in on the map feature, switch to Google Earth, print, etc to find the areas that may have been the toughest to follow.

Are you using the Potawatomi Trail map, http://www.michigandnr.com/Publications ... trails.pdf and not the Pinckney Rec "unit" map ?

I'm pretty sure all the numbered intersections have the same map posted with the "you are here" thing on it.
Just do a couple of group or guided rides and you'll be good to go. There is a MMBA ride on Thursday nights during the summer.

Thanks for the offer...since I work in Ann Arbor but live over by Detroit, my plan is to try to hit it once a week right after work, so around 5:00-5:15, if you are able to meet up on that schedule, that would be great...fair warning though, I only have one season under my belt, so I am not that fast and I may slow you down :(

Yup, thats the map I took, and yes, all the numbered intersections were clear, but what I seem to recall is quite a number of "un-numbered" intersections with trails (or at least things that looked like possible trails)...I got lucky guessing on a couple of them and backtracked on a couple of others when it became clear I wasn't on the bike trail but I know for fact that I didn't come out on any part of the trail that is on the map and then picked my way through parking lots, roads, and paths to eventually get back to my car, so I obviously made at least one wrong turn that I never realized until I was "coming out"

There are a few vague turns that aren't at numbered intersections. The section by Blind lake comes to mind and also the entrance road into Gosling lake.

Like Barry mentioned, you can try the group rides. Also post up when you plan on riding and I am sure there would be someone that can meet up. I have a pretty open schedule and no worries on the speed, getting out to ride and showing someone new to the trail is part of the fun!

You can also mix up the trails to get different lengths, 1.7, 5, 8, 10, 14, and 17 mile options (rounded down and up, but you get the idea) depending on which route you take.

I normally ride Poto at least once a week in the summer and generally it's around that time (5:00 ish). I'm not that fast either (although that's a very relative thing) and I'd be cool with joining you once the trails are ripe. I sent an email like you did 3 years ago and someone from here took me around my first time on the Poto. I would have definitely have been confused without a guide.
