Hickory Glen Park Concept Plan Meeting 3-28-11

For those of you interested, there will be a park concept plan meeting this coming Monday, (3/28/11) for Hickory Glen. I walked the park a few weeks ago with the city and it was a really productive time. This meeting will be a public hearing for what you'd like to see happen in the park going forward. This is our chance to give input to the city on any changes we'd like to add to the park (bathrooms? lights?) The meeting will be from 6-8pm at the Commerce Township Hall. Address for the Hall is

Sounds like Commerce is getting some attention lately- how did this and the photo op go?

Justin, Steve, Dave and I attended the 4-25 parks and recs meeting where the proposed long term plan was presented.

highlights: Lots of work at the front, 'active' recreation part of the park. New parking lots. Playing fields moved and updated. Bathrooms. Disc golf added. Replace floating bridge. Add a couple pedestrian/bike bridges and boardwalks to access the northern part of the park (currently inaccessible). Possible new parking lot at north end of park we could use for trail access without competing with baseball/football activities.

Bottom line, very attractive plan from our perspective. Metro South provided a letter of support for a grant to replace the floating bridge, a project proposed in this concept plan. And Justin will continue to monitor the process for further developments.

I'm sure we'll have a copy or two of the concept plan to share at the June chapter meeting.

Thanks for getting to this Loren, I've been so busy I haven't had a chance to keep checking anything but the trail conditions forum.

Loren covered most of the good stuff. The new parking lot at the northeast corner may affect the Disney Land Loop but we plan on working WITH the city to try and minimize this. With some of the other things they are proposing (bridge to the north side of the property) I think the trade off may be worth it. Of course, we'll try and keep Disney Intact as much as possible.

The city is applying for a grant from the Passport program that will help them replace the floating bridge that we currently use to get to the Northeasy Corner of the park...this would be a good thing for us as that bridge can be sketchy in marginal weather (snow, morning dew, etc). I wrote a letter of support for this and hopefully it gets the grant application approved.

Lots of good things going on out in Commerce. The city likes us and the consultant company (Wade Trim) really took our input to heart. I was a little worried after the public input session about what could happen to our trails but overall, the new plan is quite friendly to us. This is a direct result of previous years of effort put in by the MMBA and TIm Slabach representing MTBing in our area with the township.
