Which cities and townships are most bike(r) orientated?

Postby Unicornz0 » May 5th, 2010, 6:41 pm

I'm a mountain biker at heart, and intend to move to a (probably southeast) Michigan suburb, and am interested in commuting more by bike, and transitioning to a auto free lifestyle. Which cities and townships are most bike orientated and bike friendly?
Thanks in advance,
Uni

Ann Arbor would be a good option.

Rochester is really pretty good. If you live anywhere near the city there are bike paths or safe streets to both Whole Foods and Trader Joes and the whole (small, but functional) downtown area. There's also the convergence of the Paint Creek Trail, Macomb Orchard Trail, and Clinton River Trails, all of which are essentially bicycle highways providing long-distance access quite a large part of the SE Michigan area. From these one can also connect to quite a few mountain bike trails (Stony Creek, Addison, Bald Mountain, Bloomer, LOHS).

I live a bit east of there in Shelby Township and it's a bit too spread out with too many island neighborhoods making bike stuff more difficult. I've actually been looking at houses in Rochester lately, thinking that it'd be a good place to live. Of course, when work comes into play that changes things quite a bit depending on what you do, where the job may be, etc.

Definatly a good place to ride from. I don't often commute to work by bike but will often go days without use of a car. Not much in the way of jobs good in Rochester/Rochester Hills proper. Mostly a bedroom community, but as a rail trail hub, having muliple close MTB trails and essentially bieng the northern edge of civilization it is pretty much a bikers paradice.

I regularly walk, run, or ride most of my errands.
