"ouch, thats deep"

Postby jer091 » July 10th, 2012, 7:25 am

Today I was out riding with a buddy, who is a fellow firefighter/paramedic, that works with me, at River Bends. Just riding along and he yells out "ouch, thats deep" and then keeps riding for a few more strokes. we stop and I dismount and find this.

Image

upon inspection, he swipped a fallen tree that was folded in half and was splintering on both ends. He just grazed the side of it. the piece of wood was firmly stuck in his calf.

I get out a few 4x4's and kling in preperation to remove this large "sliver"

When he was ready i told him to relax his calf muscle and I would pull it out in a swift but smooth motion. 1,2,3, go....... Nothing. the piece of wood was securly in the calf muscle and would not come out with a moderate tug.

Ok, lets try this again, this time pulling harder. 1,2,3, go.....

Holy smokes!!!!!! thats not what I was expecting!

Anyways, dressing applied and kling to secure it inplace. Bleeding was very minimal and he stated it was a little sore but no real pain. Like someone kicked his calf. after bandaging was complete we finished another 18 miles of riding without incident.

Here are a few pics for reference how long the "sliver" really was

Youch. That one squicks me in an odd way. I hope he doesn't have any lingering problems from that.

Oh ya, I've got pics. That *beep* thing went right to the bone! 3 weeks before Iceman. These pics reminded me of that. This thing would make a nice prison shank! Hope you got it all out.
