"From the eyes of a newbie" (informal riders blog)

Postby IBrake4Squirrels » April 11th, 2012, 6:25 am

A lot of people on here know me, strictly from asking advice or just general discussion regarding which bike I should look at, where to ride and any tips.

Well. My 2012 session has officially begun. I have 10% battery left on this *beep* iPad so this first entry will be short and sweet, more of of a "what to expect" theme.

....To those who don't know me

I recently picked up a 2012 Carve and my buddy did a few days following me. Mad, not at all, just happy I can have someone to go with on a regular basis.

....To those who do know me

I appreciate all of you help in my decision process and even with the little things like MMBA terminology if you will. I'm picking up quick and taking ALL of your comments, suggestions and thoughts to heart and don't go unread.

(5% left, holy , this battery is going fast, must be the brightness)

Anyways, if your interested in my journeys, experiences and overall stories. Stayed turned.

Cheers!

A few weeks in..

Postby IBrake4Squirrels » April 21st, 2012, 8:01 pm

I have been extremely busy with work, school (online classes) and just keeping everything in order, however, I have definitely make time for riding.

My first ride was Easter Sunday at Maybury.
Considering that my parents were in Florida, my girlfriend was working, and all of my homework was done....What else was I to do. Wanting to go with my buddy on my first ride, I had no choice because he was up in the U.P., looks like it was all me.

As we all know, the first 3/4 - 1 mile of Maybury is pretty intense but I pushed through and made it my biiioottchhh! 8)
I will say, I severely, severely, underestimated mountain biking and give all these guys out on the trails my respect.

I finished my first ride in just under an hour. Stopping several times at the trail maps to make sure i was on the right track. Most important, I only stopped a few times to hydrate, but other than that, I pushed on.

FLASH FORWARD

Since my first ride, which I did not have my computer yet. I have official rode 60.5 miles. Not bad for only having the bike a few weeks.

Due to the close proximity of three trails to my apartment, I have spent most of my time at Maybury, Island Lake and recently, Tree Farm/Lakeshore.
I will say, Island Lake was pretty interesting.
We went, with expectations of a nice ride, but then ended up knocking out both, Yellow, followed by Blue. We had only anticipated riding Yellow and once finished, I still felt good, and so did my friend. I shall reference him from now on as Kyle.

Being Kyle’s second time out, I asked him how he felt, we talked and hydrated for a moment and were off to tackle Blue.

Yesterday I decided to make a little investment for my bike. “What Paul, what did you get?” Glad you asked.
After asking and posting my questions and concerns regarding pedals: Flats vs. Clips, I made a brave decision. I bought a set of Mallets.

Two reasons I bought these pedals:
1) The are clips, which I can ride on flats as well, and
2) I got 25% off because they were last year’s model, and 15% off the shoes…Specialized Comp BG.

I think this was a good deal. Either way, I am pretty happy about it.

I am fairly comfortable on my bike and never really saw myself putting my foot down so I decided, hey, why not. So here I am.

Odo after 13days! Not too shabby..

My new Mallets. Although the green doesn't match, I still think it looks pretty cool on the bike as a whole.

Nice looking pedals. How do the specialized shoes fit? I am probably gonna try something different than flats when my leg heals.

Sounds like you caught the bug....the MTB bug and there is only one way to treat it.... :D
I have owned many MTB shoes, but my Specialized Pro Carbon BG are by far the most comfortable
one's yet.

I have only about three miles on them so still tough to tell how well I like them just yet. During the three miles I did ride with them, they fit well and I did enjoy them. I was trying to focus more on clipping and unclipping them on the trail just so I'm "somewhat prepared" for all that.

I plan on getting in some ride ti e tomorrow however I am not sure when/where I will go, more than likely Lakeshore but who knows.. :?
