mwnovak wrote:Hi all. Haven't done much mountain biking since moving to Michigan (from California) two years ago, but I made it over to Anderson this past Friday. Did two loops each on blue, red, and green. Minor branches down here and there (moved most of them, though I expect the wind brought more down this weekend). And of course everything was covered in a layer of damp leaves: made the trail a bit hard to find/follow in places (particularly on the green loop where it first turns south), and things were a bit slick/squirrely through some of the twisties.

Question about trail etiquette around here: how late into the season can we usually ride these trails before there's a risk of tearing/rutting them up? Didn't seem to be an issue yet, but I'm wondering for the coming weeks.

Mostly I wanted to post and say that I had a blast riding out there! I understand the comments above about wanting faster/flowing lines--more than anything, this is what I miss from the riding back home--but at the same time I think Anderson presents a fun challenge: there is flow out there, but it's broken up with sections that have to be worked through at a walking pace. From what I saw, "being fast" on those loops (if fast is what you want) comes down to knowing which is which and really seizing every opportunity to crank the pedals when you can. It's just not a place that rewards complacency, if that makes sense, and that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Anyway, I'm stoked that these trails are ~15min from my house, and I hope to get a few more rides out there before the snow comes.

Glad you enjoyed the ride. You should have no issue riding the trails throughout the fall. If we get very heavy rains you might want to give it a day or two dry. Once you get to know the place, you will be moving much quicker through the slower sections. You are right that if you want to go fast you can't be complacent. It is all about acceleration and cornering. I find I use more body english on the trail at Anderson more than any other location I have ridden.

The trails in the Mid-State area will be greatly different than any thing in Cal. We have very small parks that require some creative layout to have anything more than a couple mile trail. I believe most trials in Cal. are in much larger open spaces allowing for a little more open flow. Not all trail systems in Mich. are like this, it is just the situation we have in the MidState area.

Come out and join us for the group ride on Thursday evenings.

Tree down on the green loop that will require a chainsaw to remove. It's just shy of a mile in at the top of the hill that goes down past the other fallen tree that has now become a log ride. It can be ridden over but is a bit large in my opinion to stay, don't really need any more speed bumps out there.

When were you there, Shaun? I got there around 5:15 and rode til just before 7. Fair bit of debris on the trail branches and twigs in addition to the leaves. I kicked a few of the really ugly ones off the trail. There's a tree down on the blue loop, too.

Anyone ever checked out the bar just south of Wardell road? Looks like a bit of a dive...been a few years since I went to a bar with a dirt parking lot!

The B+I Bar. I remember going there when I was a kid. It's an old shop bar. I like it because they let Logan in. Food was pretty good.

I can probably get out there this weekend. Steve, do you have a better location for the tree on the blue loop?

Got there around 4:30, did one loop of the green and had to call it a day. Was having issues with my new chain

We should go have a few beers at that place after our next group ride. Never ventured inside before, can't be all that bad.

Thanks! It's actually not in a bad spot for a log pyramid but dealers choice there--removal might be easier. It's not far in from the blue loop entrance that's west of the pond nearest Old Lansing road, less than a mile in. Someone(s) piled small branches on it to make a half-assed pyramid but it's not really sufficient for any long term use.

Thanks--when I looked left pulling out I saw the lit up "BAR," sign and it made me curious...

New chain skipping on your old cog(s)/ring(s)? That's fun.

Probably safety in numbers is you're gonna wear spandex into an old neighborhood bar, eh?

As you climb the first hill on the blue loop, make sure you stay on the trail. Someone decided to bury fido just off the trail, but didn't bury it deep enough. Something else found it and exposed part of the remains. Based on the condition of the body, I would guess that it was buried this year.

Trail is currently fairly slick, as the leaves are holding the moisture. A few greasy spots as well.

Tree down on red on a downhill, somewhere in the middle. It is completely severed at the top, but suspended over the trail by vines. After crashing, we fruitlessly attempted to pull it down, before giving in to failure. It will require a saw. Or many men.

Lots of smaller deadfall. Cleared some. Left others.

Went to the aforementioned B&I Bar. Nobody got shanked. Mission accomplished.

Got a nice ride in today. The trail was surprisingly fast. Also cleared the leaves away from the culvert in the playground. Surprised to see the trail flagged throughout and some clearing/trimming was done and a lot of the sticks were kicked aside for the Woldumar 1/2 marathon. The cement pile was cleared also.

Yeah, I did two laps there this morning and it was surprisingly dry. I expected slick wet leaves but 'twas not the case. Just one or two small wet spots easily negotiated.

A lot of flags and such marking the marathon route from yesterday still on the trail, but I ran into a couple of guys that are collecting them so that shouldn't be a problem for long. I moved a couple of smallish logs off the trail and lost the trail in the leaves once or twice but overall, great day for a ride.

Did a few laps last night on Red and Green.

Green has a very low branch just aft the first log pile that suprised me in the dark last night. Perfect height for clotheslining. I wasn't able to clear it by myself, it will probably require a saw (~6 inch diameter).

We encountered your headhunter at tonight's group ride. Everyone squeezed under it on the first lap. Then we tried backwards green, and it makes the log pile pretty much impossible, so we broke it off. We dragged another tree off somewhere, but I forget the location. Pretty sure everything is open and clear now.

I see someone added a minor log pile on green, and filled the chronic mud hole w/branches. Otherwise, things are leafy and cold. Very cold.

Other log was on Green as well.
My only complaint is I wish Brad would turn up the heat out there a bit!
