After another inch and a half of snow and no new (bike) tracks on 70% of the trail... I just rode a couple sections again.

"Pretty unridable for most mortals." ..as so eloquently stated by utabintarbo. Need some of those 4" wide tires, or a different trail with more user traffic.

Don't try the bike path down Commerce Road to Oakley Park either...... I tried riding down from my house to ride the Hick. No go. It took me about 45 min to go 3 miles.. mostly walking. I thought the snowmobile tracks would make it firm enough to ride, but no way.
Once I hit the plowed bike path, I was so happy to ride more than 3 miles an hour that I just rode the path and subdivisions.

Total ride. 2.5 hours and 12 miles.... now THAT is burning rubber!

Fantastic temps today, stayed at 32F from what I could tell arriving around 11AM and leaving around 3PM. Funny, going home my Escape's thermometer climbed past 36F once I was south of I-96.

I did one complete lap then went back for another with the exception of the area past the bridge. The snow was ligher on that side, did see some of the ground there, no mud. Lots of crusty snow, but it never turned to mush throughout the afternoon. Still a good depth bewteen the trailhead and the bridge. One small section was not even touched, I've pretty much packed that down. Hard to say if it will be that way tomorrow, get out early if you ride.

I've not ridden snow in the condition I saw today for that length of time, the fat tires really floated on this stuff which surprised me as it did take some effort to pedal the first lap. Not sure if a regular bike will sink in my tracks or not.

Rode yesterday after Steve and found it slightly easier to ride than on the 11th (my last post)- but still very high effort required. Rode today and it was FAR EASIER, much more solid, 3 or 4 sets of bike tracks and warmer temps and its getting packed quickly.

I rode a section on Sunday (1/17) and just as Spin stated, a high level of effort is needed. Don't expect to go to fast.

Steve, were those your fatty tracks? Your tracks just seemed to ride on top of that snow.. looks like fun!

By this weekend, should be in pretty good shape. Do you think the rain on Sunday is going to trash it and turn it into a mud slide?

Should be! Hopefully you guys all made that long climb with the tree on the left halfway up. It was all deep mashed snow from hikers and a previous rider that didn't appear to make it. The first pass I had to walk up after the tree, then I turned around and rode all the way back down, then I could climb it. Then I made a third pass on my second lap. Towards the end as you just see the parkinglot and go back into the trail - there were no tracks, the snow was untouched. Those were the major "dig in" areas for me, other than that I had a lot of float. Odd - I still did get some rolling resistance from the frosty condition of that snow in thin areas, but it was great fun rolling over some of the bumpy footprints.

Thanks guys for packing the trail! I did 1 lap this morning(Jan.22nd) and the trail was mostly packed about 6"to 8" wide. Some soft spots and someone was having a hard time zig zagging back and forth several times.Good ride.

Got out before noon on Sat (23rd) and the snow covered trail was fine, a bit soft, but very rideable and fun. Had studs, which I would still advise due to the ever present of some icy spots. Raining now so I am glad I got one in yesterday. Let's hope the frozen ground sheds the water and the trails stay firm.

Much of the trail is smooth, but some sections are very rough and there's lots of ice under the snow.

Did a couple of laps this morning and the trail was great. Much better than lakeshore park, which I did yesterday. Very little ice exposed through the packed snow. Nice. I will be back tomorrow. :P

Is it ride-able without studs?

Thanks!

Yes. I had studs because once I put them on I leave them on until April, but I think it would be good without. :P

Did a couple laps again this sunny morming and the trail was perfect! No issues at all. Good traction and 22degrees a couple of inches of powder. All good. Nice! :P

Trail is still in great shape. I road without studs and had no problem. Ride before the snow hits on Tuesday.

Did a couple laps yesterday afternoon (3/7/10), and it was the best riding you could ask for. The trail was packed and firm about 8' wide with no ice showing through. I used studs (I always use studs) but you could get away with out them. Ride it! The more the better.
