Someone really rutted (3" wide and 3" deep in ice) the first mile up until the expert loop. Many footprints made for a difficult and bumpy ride. Nice in the pines.

I tried riding Saturday morning. I could not ride through the ruts in the first mile so I switch to the 2 track which was nicely pack by X-country skiers. I jump back on the trail just before the Star Wars area and was able ride reasonably well following another tire track. I was however focusing too much on the trail and almost took my head off on a widow maker just after the rock garden about 7.5 mile on the trail. My helmet hit the main trunk but a big branch caught my head just below the visor. A little lower and would have taken out an eye. Lesson learned! Don't just look at the trail! I'll never ride the trail without a helmet!!!

yep, first mile or so sucks. I now take the access road back to the expert split and go from there . Track down the person who put the rut by the tire print and take his (or her) valve core out of their valve stem.:)

Metro South: Novi

Postby Loren » February 16th, 2011, 6:32 am

A number of us were able to attempt the group ride last night. The areas that had a lot of hiker traffic were hard packed, solid, and rideable but jarring. Off the hard pack, deep snow stopped you in your tracks. Still, got a few miles in!

At this time of year, trail conditions can change hour by hour.

Right now, the singletrack is a mix of clear dirt, ice, and snow. Definitely rideable (with studs) when frozen, but that's not always the case with the warmer temperatures that we see from time to time.

If in doubt, if you see more than superficial tire tracks in the dirt, please take the nearest 2 track back out to the lot and avoid the trail until the ground is firmly frozen again.

Kind of goes without saying, but please avoid Novi for awhile...

Who's got the latest on conditions at Novi? I know it's gotta be unrideable right now, but please keep us posted! Any guesses as to how much longer before it's OK to ride? Thanks.

Think it's going to be awhile yet. More rain and 'wintery mix' in the forecast for the next few days.

Went out on foot yesterday from 1-2 and 7-12. There were some deep tire cuts from 1-2, tried to step on them and flatten out. The back sections are actually doing great (better than Maybury was a few days ago)! Still some thick ice around the corners & hidden under the pines.

I moved what debris I could, but still counted about 1/2 dozen low-hang or down trees; Marked them with my Garmin and can post if needed, but they were mostly from 10-13.

MTB just around the corner :D

Thanks for the cleanup and trail report!

With lows in the teens and just above freezing during the day, I expect Lakeshore will be quite rideable over the weekend.

Early in the day - not in the sun.
Hope is not a good strategy.

Ride early the trail will be frozen. Watch out for the sun on 29 degree days, it is soft then.

Not many pizza cutters yet. Quite a few big trees down. Otherwise trail is good - WHEN FROZEN. Go for it.

Metro South: Novi

Postby WallEyed » March 29th, 2011, 7:30 pm

We did a scouting mission at Lakeshore Park tonight and the conditions were quite sad. The trail is still saturated and even ice covered in spots. The unfortunate part is that it is trashed and rutted up from riders already. With the current overnight freeze and daytime thaw, it will likely be unrideable for quite some time.

Please, please, please hold off riding Novi for a while still!
