Tried the trail today. First time the parking lot was easier than the trail. Got about 100 feet, and got tired of the stop start business, so I turned around and headed back to the parking lot. Quite slushy, couple more days maybe of melting ought to do it.

Yeah.

Unfortunately, the 40 degree weather this weekend might bring thaw conditions. We'll see...

We marked this trail as "avoid". Warm conditions mean that some portions of the trail are no longer snow covered and are very soft.

Early mornings when the ground is frozen is your best bet for now.

Did a small hike this morning, trail is still too soft for riding.

Did another scouting hike this afternoon. Awesome to be hiking in the woods in shirt sleeves...

The trail is still too soft for riding. While open, clear areas are drying out nicely, areas under tree cover are still soft and wet. You don't need to walk far to encounter ice and snow patches, like this:

and so we'll continue to keep the trail marked as "avoid".

(The pump track is dry and firm and ready for riding if you want to session that!)

Dave and I talked, and we decided to mark the farm as Open. Conditions are generally as you would expect after a light rain - slightly tacky, a few muddy areas, but overall firm and solid. Areas that were in dense shade and snow covered as of a few days ago are still very soft. As always, please ride through the mud rather than around, as it's much easier to add a few shovels full of dirt to fill a hole than narrow a trail.

Ride safe!

Update:

There are some trees down, but nothing in a location to surprise the unwary. We'll get to them soon.

Also note that there's been a motorcycle out in the 754/Lost Loop area. If you see or hear anything, please notify the Novi Police at 248-348-7100. (If you ride Novi often, you should have that in your cell phone, just in case.)

Probably stupid kids. Ran into one in Hick glen last year... Wasn't surprised to see a teenager on it.

I too saw the tracks when my wife and I rode in the late afternoon on Friday.
One larger tree down in the path just before the crater on a down hill section.
Easily seen, just be careful if attempting to jump it since it is on an decline.

Did 1.5 laps on my newly-old built up singlespeed FS bike.

Now being on geared and singlespeed, I think it is simply an another "culture" per se. Singlespeed has its interesting moments, and geared bike also has its interesting moments. Didn't think one was definitely better than other.

No mud on down tube, couple of soft spots, and no puddles or snow.

Most likely. Oh man if I had trails like that by me when was a kid I'd have a hard time resisting too. :) I ride a dirt bike, but you have to drive 3 hours to ride anywhere, so my mtb bike sees much more action.

Any idea if the weekly ride will be happening tomorrow?

Rode about 1 mile before turning around...it was really slick from the melting mud. Headed off to Hickory Glen and then rode to Milford via Proud Lake which was dry.

This is a great example of how rapidly conditions can change this time of year.

Yesterday morning, Dave made a great call and bailed because of trail conditions. Early afternoon scouting reports hinted that things were better, but we should consider making a plan B for the group ride. By ride time in the evening, the trail conditions were fine - a couple soft mud holes, but 99.9 % firm and solid for the ride. Everyone came out with clean bikes. :D
