I don't know how to fix this problem. Seems like we have to bring it up at least once a year.

Good call Jake. I do have an assortment of weapons and I am a pretty good shot. :D

Even I noticed the missing log after the stunt on Looman's. I wonder if it is bikers or hikers that are making these unauthorized changes?

Is this the one after what used to be the smaller teeter-totter and was at the top of a downhill that curves to the right? If so, somebody has really gone too far. It should have been obvious that this is a part of the trail that has been there for a long time. Wow.

I like Jeff's idea of putting up a sign like:

"This trail feature has been removed without authorization. This log had been a part of the Burchfield trail system for over 15 years and had been ridden literally thousands of times. Those who did not want to ride it lifted their bikes up over it and left it to be ridden by those who appreciate such technical features. Burchfield is known for technical features and a mix of easy and difficult areas. Please DO NOT change the trails."

Yeah, I know, I'm too wordy ... and I just guessed at the 15 years as well. But I do think a sign there would be helpful and may save us from seeing even more things removed out there. Sigh.

Good point. I have heard storys of hikers hacking out roots and what not at other trails but haven't really noticed much of that going on here or at Anderson untill now. Has been a lot of foot traffic out at Burchfield early on in the year due to the nice weather so who knows.

Just doesn't make sense that a hiker would do it.
Yes, the small log after what used to be a teeter totter.
Keeping the purple trail available was to encourage riders to get comfy there and then continue to progress in skills. Small things like that log are easy. The rock section could take a bit of work but was easily passable.
Some kind of note might help create some awareness or incite anger. Trail simplification seems to take place on most trails. Even some of the more twisty and technical turns now have worn in bypasses. In some cases the old line is barely visible. Perhaps it's like time, it just happens.

Island lake has never been technical. Now thanks to the shortcuts it's even less technical. I just don't get it. It doesn't make sense for a hiker or biker to dumb down a trail but one of them did it. Trail turds is what they are.

The Highland rock bandit turned out to be some clown stealing rocks for landscaping his yard, and not a hiker or biker. You just never know. Personally, I blame the frisbee golfers.

The sad thing is the beginner trail is only a few feet away, and has miles of less techy riding/walking/running if that is what the aim is.

Reminder: Trail day this Saturday May 5th. Meet at Riverbend at 8:30. An eagle scout candidate is tearing out and rebuilding the Red Route 1 stunt.

Another opportunity to help out will be on May 12th. This is the SECOND project by an eagle scout candidate. Approximately 250' of bridges will be built on the new trail that is next to McNamara (and currently closed due to spring flooding).

Meet at McNamara at 9:00. Be prepared to work in calve deep water. Bring a drill.

To summarize: May 5th, 8:30, Riverbend May 12th, 9:00, McNamara

Hope to have a great turnout to help these ambitious young men!

Thanks!

I was telling F7Cannon about the drunk camper I saw at Brighton trying to chop up a trail bridge with and axe for firewood. Talk about going for the low-hanging fruit...that treated lumber makes the S'mores taste funny anyway.

Overdrive wrote:My ?s here are unrelated to the great work and alternatives that Shaun, Reid, etc. have been doing. But wanted to query if anyone reading this is familiar with these recent changes:

Just ahead of Loman's Run and farther in: The easy log after the initial stunt is cut out, later on a nice rock was dug out at the end of the rotted stump in the mini rock garden. The rocks have been there since the trail was cut and that rotted tree was a large healthy downfall blocking the trail route. The other 5" log was in place for the TT last fall so a bit of a mystery why is was taken out.
There's a nice mix of near highway trail and challenging stunts. It's the mix that makes the place great.

Was out doing some riding today and minor overgrowth clearing. I saw the rock you are talking about Anne and returned it to it's proper home. It was just a few feet off of the trail to the left. As for the log I think it might be a goner. Saw several in that general area but had no way of telling if any of them were it and I couldn't move any of them by myself any way. I might build a new log pile or small A frame there in it's place if knowbody objects to it.
