Mid-State: Bennett Park

For posting trail-specific conditions and problems

Bennett/Burchfield

Postby nwalton44 » July 30th, 2008, 3:20 pm

Can anyone tell me if Bennett is comporable to Burchfield? I'm getting a little bored with the same trails 4+ days per week, but don't want to drive to Charlotte if it's not that much different.

THanks

It doesn't have stunts like Burchfield. It is all singletrack that twist back and forth thru a small area. The problem is the area is still under repair due to storm damage. Some trails are rideable but not all.

Another trail is being built at Anderson Park in southwest Lansing. If you have the time this weekend I'm sure the trail coordinator would show you around if you helped out at the trail day.

Most all of Bennett is now open. Jungle I & II, the pines (one or two trees still to cut), the Hardwoods & Gully, and Trillium Road.

The new Connector between the pines and hardwoods is open and definately needs riden and signed.

Some signs still need replacing / added and hopefully I will have some temporary signs up before the weekend.

I will be out there Thursday and Friday evening attempting to finish clearing the pines and BC (formerly the North Shore). We have an awesome 4 to 5' diameter burr oak tree that is going to give us a fantastic ride. 50' from the base to the first branch. It's a big old mother.

So come ride, come work, but just come. And if you need a guided tour, those are available as well.

And as Brad posted in the previous post, Anderson Park is nearby and they could use your help this weekend. It will be great to have three trails so close together and will make a *beep* of a ride, especially if you ride to all three!

Bennett Park is Open

All trails are open, including the new connector between the pines and the hardwoods. It is flagged and needs riding.

The only trail left to work on is BC, formerly North Shore. I will be out there Friday evening around 7:00 to start sculpting our new log ride..... what else do you do with a 4-1/2' diameter burr oak that fell parallel to our trail.... ride it!

All the trees are now out of the way.... after a few weeks of cleaning up from the most recent storm, we now can get on with routine maintenance and bridge building.

Please get out and ride!

Rode BP last Thursday. You guys did a great job clearing the trails!!!! :D
I saw the damage done by the storms before any work was done and thought I might have to wait a long time before I could enjoy BP again. Wish I could have helped with the clean up but commitments to the Paramedic bike team in Jackson and Adrian kept me from coming. (Yes, I get paid to ride a mountain bike and I love it!!!)

HEY PEOPLE!!!! Get out to Charlotte and ride this trail. It is VERY nice and a pretty good workout. Alot of effort has been put into it. Great job again folks!

Bennett Park is flooded.
Most of the jungles and trillium road are under water as well as large parts of the Hardwoods. The pines are probably all rideable. As of this evening there is no way to get from the north side of the river to the south side without traversing water.
The river is up to the bottom of the old car bridge overflowing it's banks on the south side. It should be cresting tonight or tomorrow, by the weekend most everything should be ridable.

I'll keep you posted.

Still Flooded.

If the river has crested, it hasn't dropped much. Water is still lapping at the bottom of the car bridge. Half of BC (the former North Shore) is under water along with Trillium and the Jungles.

I didn't venture into the pines or the hard woods this evening.

I was dismounted on the paved path ducking under a dead fall. I was too busy making sure I got my helmet light under it, I forgot to lower my ars.
Ripped a jersey, a pair of bibs and my back. The back skin will grow back, but that jersey will look like crap when it is stiched back together. I did land on my feet, but I got quite the tire burn on the back side my knee.
Geeez, I thought I was safe sticking to the pavement.

Still Flooded.

I can only imagine what life would be like if your home was built in a flood plain.

The original prediction of rideable by Friday has been tossed out the river or floated down stream. I have never seen the water stay so high for so long. It just keeps on coming and coming.

I'll keep you posted.

Is this trail rideable or is it flooded?
It's not your strength or skill. It's your level of commitment.

The hardwoods and pine sections are ridable, the upper and lower jungle will be awhile as will the north river trail.

I walked parts of both Jungles, Trillium and BC this evening. All are rideable. A little slimy here and there, but definitely rideable. Lots of trail debris and a few face slappers. It looks like any trail would after it has been flooded. It will be a few weeks before I can get out there and clean anything up. The clavicle rebuild, does hinder the amount of trail work I can do. If anyone has some time, a trip through the park with a blower would do wonders.

BC, Trillium, Hardwoods, and the Pines have been sanitized. Parts of Jungle II as well. The balance will be taken care of Saturday afternoon. There still are a few face slappers here and there and a couple of big ones in the pines, but all are rideable. Todays weather should dry the trail up nicely.

Reminder that there is a trail day Sat. Nov. 15th to set the frames for two bridges in the hardwood. 9:00 am start.

The fall clean up is complete, every thing blown clean, face slapper cut out (I think I got them all), logs cut, etc.

It was nice seeing the state board out riding yesterday, I hope you enjoyed our trail.
