SRAM PowerLink Compatibility

Postby balexander87 » April 24th, 2013, 9:09 pm

Has anyone had any luck using a SRAM PowerLink with other brands of chains? I am currently running the KMC chain that came on my bike new. It has a version of the PowerLink on it. I have a spare SRAM PowerLink that I am hoping to carry with me as a means of repairing a broken chain. I just tried to install it in the place of the KMC master link, and it felt like it was going to be a lot tighter than the KMC link. The chain is a 9spd chain. The PowerLink is a 9spd link. Should there be any issue?

Thanks!

I find them interchangeable, and prefer the KMC version.

No issues as long as you use the 9spd with a 9 spd and 10spd with a 10spd. I've used all sorts of combinations and haven't had any issues.

Thanks! I suspected that as long as I had the speeds matched up, I shouldn't have any issues, but it's good to have some confirmation!

I've mixed speeds and have never had an issue. I have a 9-speed powerlink on my 10-speed chain right now... YMMV.

KMC master links are for sale separately if you don't want to risk a compatibility issue. Keep in mind that a master link that fits a little too tight on a clean chain is much harder to install on a dirty chain during a trail-side repair.
