Looking for a Hayes Handlebar Clamp Bolt

Postby awol12 » July 1st, 2012, 1:02 pm

So I am now at the banging my head on a wall portion of this hunt. I have a stripped out head on a handle bar clamp bolt. The bolt is a 4mm head and about 3/4 inch long. I have called or visited every shop I can think of in Lansing and no one is for sure if they have unless I come in or bring in the whole bike. I even went out and grabbed a couple of bolts that looked like they would fit from the hardware store and that was a no go. I am hoping that maybe some one has an extra bolt laying around and could help me out. I would imagine that any clamp bolt from the Hayes Stroker series would help; mine are the rydes if that makes a difference. Also I will listen to anyone that has an idea of a shop that might actually have the bolt in question.

Your best bet is to probably contact hayes. I've read rave reviews on how good their CS is.

I would also try fastenal or grainger if you have one near you as well.

I contacted Hayes originally about it and they suggested taking it into a shop or just trying to find a bolt that matched from a hardware store. I can order a new clamp kit, but don't really want to spend $12+ for one bolt.

Take it to your local Fastenal. It won't be cheap, but it'll get you the bolt.

Just go to the hardware store. Is this on a stroker or double clamp style brake? It will be an m4-m6 metric bolt. I've replaced one and just grabbed it at a hardware store with a respectable metric selection. Pick up a nice stainless one for a buck and be done with it. Nothing weird there.

It's a double bolt clamp, the heads size 4 metric allen wrench. When I went in today to look for bolts all I could find is a one bolt that was too big and one that was too small. Recommend any hardware shops have that have a good metric selection that might also have a location in the Lansing area?

Taylor hardware in fenton will have it. Locally owned hardware store. No idea in lansing.

Midstate screw and bolt in flint area should have one as well.

There is a MidStates Bolt and Screw in Lansing so I might just head over there after I hear from Hayes tomorrow hopefully. Just can't believe it's so much work to find one little bolt.

Sometimes it takes a little work to find a local shop versed in metric. Once you do, it's easy after that. A majority of bolts on your bike will be between a few sizes. Stock up when you go there, get a couple bolts that fit your brake calipers (should be m6x1.0) and take a bolt out of your stem when you go to get an extra of that. One that fits your seatpost as well. Carry the three bolts in your bag, because eventually, when you ride long enough, one of them will break, and you'll be under way again quickly'

Lowes or Home Depot. They have huge racks of bolt trays, just bring yours in and find one to match. I did that with a seatpost clamp bolt.

Found the bolt I needed at an Ace around the block from me. Ended up being an M4 bolt, guess I should have just headed up there first. Thanks for all the advice.

nice. Grab a stainless one if you get a chance so you don't have to worry about stripping a crappy bolt again.

PS, I just bled a set of strokers using the avid syringes, and they came out really really nice, FYI/
