PLRA conditions...

Postby Rider » March 10th, 2003, 10:47 pm

With the temps rising into the high 40's/low 50's this weekend... will PLRA get real muddy? I haven't been there since late October, so I don't know what to expect.

With the temperature forcast I would play it safe and say every trail is going to be mud or worse. So do not get excited about a nice ride in the warm weather this weekend. I am thinking of a urban ride this weekend. If I feel like playing in the mud and then doing a bunch of bike maintenace I might go play in the gravel pit across the street, where riding in the mud does less damage than the front loaders moving the dirt.

My bet is that there will still be snow on the trails this weekend. The ground is still pretty cold and even with temps in the 50's that stuff won't disappear instantly.

remember to practicve extreme restraint...the trails WILL NOT be ridable for weeks to come...see the discussions about the spring thaw in the several posts below...especially a heavy traffic trail like plra...

besides, we've all waited this long...several more weeks of patience will only pay off in dividends in mid april...at least you'll be able to ride without wearing friggin' snowmobile gear...

trail conditions

Postby HappyHelmet » March 11th, 2003, 9:35 am

I rode ILRA yesterday. It was predominantly thick ice, some icy snow, and a couple muddy spots. I would guess that any trail that saw much bike/foot/snowmobile traffic before the rain is now ice. A great time to test the effectiveness of your studs. I will also venture a guess that it will remain ice through quite a few warm days. Hike it around the mud, and the trails should be rideable for the near future.

There were already a lot of mud puddles there Sunday from the warm temps. and rain Saturday. They were frozen mostly Sunday but it's going to be wet for a long time until the ground thaws and allows draining to occur.

She's the reason I wrecked my dixie... :D Actually, it's a cartoon rendering of my girlfriend (don't tell my wife!) riding Novi Tree farm a few years back on a rigid bike
