Bike Saddle

Postby Doug » February 14th, 2003, 10:47 pm

I have a Specialized Allez 24 (the real basic $600 road bike, got it a month or so ago). The saddle it comes with is the Specialized Body Geometry Comp. I have been riding the bike on my trainer (I finally got a trainer 8) ). The seat seems to be low quality, rather uncomfortable. Do these saddles have to be broke in? If so, how long? If the saddle is better replaced, what are some good/nice road bike saddles out there (that will not break the bank, and are more comfortable)? Or might I just have to keep messing with the adjustment?

Doug.................
There's very little break-in w/ a modern saddle. As we say in our shop, "saddles are a very presonal thing", and it may be that you and the one you have aren't meant for each other. It'd also true that position adjustments can completely change your perception of a seat as well. Make sure that it's not too high, and that it's basically level. As synergistic as bikes are, the wrong stem/bar combination can make you hate your saddle too. As far as other saddles, ( if it comes to that), many brands now offer a "try-it-and return-it-if-you-don't-like-it" deal. Serfas, Terry and Trico to name three. Many shops have loaners or their own comfort guarantee as well.
When it comes to making sure your bike fits properly..........find a shop w/ some fitting experience or go the trial and error route. The good news is that the winter is a great time to sort out any position issues. If you kind get comfy sittin' on the *beep* trainer...............you're all set to be outside!

I ride an allez and used the stock saddle for almost 2 years before swapping it out. They're not low-quality, but they are hard and unforgiving, and for me, unfomfortable. My Selle Italia Flite and Flite SLR have treated me MUCH better.
