I've never tried this trick with a banana, but I definitely encourage others to. :-D

It would be wise to do a short hot weather pre ride on a favorite trail to learn you limits.
A pre ride will show you how much your heart rate will increase due toe heat. Don't exceed this limit on the long ride.
Ridding a long distances on a new trail in hot weather is high risk for heat stroke because you will not have any reference marks to judge how over heated you are.
Do not ride alone, on the long ride!

Agree'd - it's the singlemost effective way of keeping a handle on overheating in the hot. Makes a huge difference.....

Also, if you have SPD equipped sandals, (or switch to flats and use regular sandals), keeping your feet cool helps to keep the rest of you cool.
And if you can, place your tent so you benefit from cooling air descending down terrain, as it slopes towards lower ground as the night arrives and the air temps diminish - free air conditioning...cooling air rolls downhill.
