MTB shorts

Postby sndmn2 » June 6th, 2012, 12:05 pm

O.K. I was sorta taken aback by the price of riding shorts and a little confused. I currently ride with traditional black padded chammy seat shorts with gym shorts over those. I was looking for a short that I could carry a few essentials in, keys, etc. Do most shorts come with detachable liners that are already padded? ? Could you guys lead me in the right direction as to what to look for? Recommendations ? There are plenty of options and I really don't know one from the other. Does higher price reflect better quality ?Thanks.

I'm not a fan of shorts, but to avoid embarrassing my kids in front of their friends in my "circus outfit" as they call it I picked up a pair of these http://www.rei.com/product/809765/novar ... horts-mens and I think they are a good alternative, I can carry my keys, multi-tool and iphone in these w/out really noticing I'm carrying anything. The chamois in them is really nice and is still comfortable during longer rides @ 215lbs

Shorts with a removable liner/chamois seem to fit better.

I’ve tried a few different brands and the Zoic Ether is by the best fitting shell for me. They have plenty of pockets and look decent. The liner is not the greatest, but it’s removable so I can wear whatever I want under.

when i need to ride with shorts on instead of just my 'spandex' I wear a light weight pair of cargo shorts over my bike shorts. works good and its much less expensive.

i usually carry keys in my jersey back pouches and havn't lost them yet

My husband and I both have a pair of PI liner cycling shorts. You can wear them under any pair of shorts/pants you want. They are great for riding with the kids.

+1 here. I just wear a pair of $10 Old Navy cargo shorts overtop my normal spandex ones. Keys, phone, etc either go in my jersey pocket or camelbak pocket.

Zoic makes a great, well thought out product with removable liners.
in it to ride, not to accessorize.

I wear something similar to this when I'm not racing, or its not 90 degrees out. (Then I get all spandexy like other racers.)

Black basketball shorts, boxer briefs. Keys go in the Camelbak.

Padding? What's padding for anyhow? I ride hours at a stretch and have never needed padded shorts. My butt is only a little sore after the first ride or 2 of the season and then I'm fine.

I have Pearl Izumi Canyons... on the expensive end but I get them at discount... but they are pretty much like wearing just the spandex because they are so light and vent well. Stuff goes in the camelback.

I usually wear a chamois, and the Men's Core shorts from Lululemon. I also wear Fox and Sugoi, but those are nowhere as near comfortable as the Lululemon shorts. More on the expensive side, but very worth it. The last pair I got on sale, so I was pretty happy. The first pair was a gift, along with a shirt. Shirt was returned for another pair of the shorts.

In have two pair of zoic ethers and I like them a lot. My only issue with them is the thin zippers.

I really like my bellwether switchback shorts. Enough pockets, semi stylish, and great pads for me.
