On June 26th, 2010, working in cooperation with Shelby Township’s Parks and Recreation Department, the Michigan Mountain Biking Association’s (MMBA) Metro North Chapter completed the first mile of new singletrack, multi-use, off-road trail in River Bends Park. Located in the southwest area of the park and between the existing two-track trail and part of the Clinton River’s floodplain, this trail winds its way up and down a beautifully wooded, terraced ridge.
Hoping to beat the summertime heat, fourteen MMBA volunteers met at 8:30 a.m, picked up rakes, McLeods, string trimmers, and shovels and set out into the woods to clear a path along the marked trail route. They worked together to complete the first mile of trail using International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) best practices for sustainable trail construction while braving the mosquitoes and humidity.
With the first phase of new singletrack in River Bends Park complete and ready to host cyclists, hikers, and trail runners alike, the MMBA will now begin looking at where the next phase of trail construction can go.
